The word "commit" has a very loose definition to 17 and 18 yr olds. When they actually sign the LOI is when you know they actually are going somewhere else.

Even then, with the transfer portal, they are really only locked in for one year at the place they sign.

We got off to a crazy start. Beamer went after, and got us into great position with, a lot of blue chip guys. To the point of it being unprecedented how many big time guys we were in good shape on. For the most part we're getting beat out by UGA or home schools. When you swing for the fences, you are going to strike out more. I think we'll end the summer with Paylor, Stewart, and Hill. If that comes to fruition, we're entering the season with 16 commits, 11 of them being 4-5 star kids.

I don't think it's over with Adams. VT is going to do well to win 3 games this year. If we can keep momentum going on the field it will pay off BIGLY in the portal with some of these guys we're barely missing on.

Rivals, On3 and 247 show USC with 13 commits, 0 5 stars and 8 4 stars. It is tough to pull any substantial number or 4 and 5 star kids away from the top programs and/or their home or lifelong dream schools. Most players who end up in the portal don't do so because they are seeing too much playing time and are having too good of a season. Have to keep plugging away at recruiting and really need to win at least 9 games to get better HS players to notice USC.

At one point, our class almost entirely 4*.

We just got off to such a crazy hot start, a downturn was expected, so I wasn't too worried about the perceived drought in commits. It feels like we need something good to happen though. Adams, in particular, was a hit since we were favored for him all the way up until last week.

From a need standpoint and a perception standpoint, it's a must that we land Hill next month.

Correct. I was saying if we land those 3 I mentioned we would have 16, with 11 being blue chip guys.

VT came in at the last minute with NIL. I've read in a few different places that Beamer doesn't like to play that game, and would rather reserve those big NIL deals for current players that have proven themselves. We'll see how that shakes out. But if Adams is the star of a 3 win team, my bet is that he will be informed of a very lucrative deal in Cola.

That's why I called it a "family commit" and not his commit. Family in his ear about the $$$.

We're taking hits where we can't afford to take them. With Russell passing on us, it's all on Hill for us to pick up another RB in this class, which is a position of absolute dire need. If we don't land Hill, we'll just have to dip down and take some random 3* or try to pick up a transfer.

There is a whole high school season to play and the possibly a RB will emerge with an outstanding season. Granted it’s a long shot but it happens. If we miss on Stewart,
Paylor and Hill, it will be a serious downer in what started out so promising.

I know we need RB depth and something will come along. Don't sleep on Braswell's impact. I know he's a FR but given an opportunity, he might surprise.

Agree. We land those 3 and ride into the season with some big time momentum. Then get some of these guys in WB for some night games and see what happens. In Beamer I trust!

I have been reluctant to admit that our early recruiting momentum had sputtered out, but it has. Screeching halt, actually.
Typical expectation and happening , for long-time Carolina fans. Lucy is always near by to pull the football.

Conner Shaw was a 3 star. We are not at the level of flipping 5 stars like the Ol’ Ball Coach did, but we could be in a year or 2, maybe.

He just commented on the pessimism of the DA’s from our fanbase, so I highly doubt Adams will come here based off his latest reply for (us) to “respect his decision lol”

Most players who get a lot of playing time and have good seasons don’t go in the portal but there’s plenty that do. Just look at who is and isn’t on our roster. Lloyd, Bell, Stogner, Burch, and Edmond left, and Wells, Geer, Simon, Knox, Lewis, Spaulding etc came on board after good seasons and plenty of playing time. Building out of the portal is just the nature of recruiting now , and can be a game changer

Nobody expected him to come here.

Numerous outlets had him as a lean to us or at worst neck and neck with UNC. "He was never coming here" is what we always say when a recruit we want commits somewhere else.

Meh. Recruiting is a marathon, not a sprint. And with NIL and decommits, it's better not to get excited about any player or class till the ink is dry.

It definitely is a marathon, but it's also one of those things that can snowball. The simple fact, though, is that success creates expectations. Hitting on all of those recruits early and now missing on every big recruit for a few months now creates the perception that we're slipping. Even if the reality is that we'll probably land about where we normally do in recruiting, but that will seem disappointing considering how high we were in the rankings a few months ago.

I was cautious at the time, realizing as you say that it's a marathon and it was VERY early in the process and many of the big name schools hadn't really gotten going yet. We were bound to fall off in the rankings. No way we were going to keep up with the big boys for the long haul.

Fans have developed any number of defense mechanisms to explain away missed recruits, but it's been an undeniable dry spell and we need a little good news from somewhere on the trail. We could hit another spurt of getting 3 or 4 blue chip commits and this will all be a distant memory.

Needless to say, Daniel Hill is a MUST get. We have not yet hit big for RB in this cycle, but we need to and Hill is our last shot. If we miss on him, we'll go into salvage mode.

4* two-way lineman Liam Andrews from MA just announced his top 3 yesterday with us, PSU and Wisconsin. All the outlets have him pegged for PSU, though. He will announce on Friday.

Not great, but it's a Bama pub. He'd probably say great things about USC if he spoke with one of our outlets.

Nevertheless, we've got our work cut out for us.
Regardless whether it’s a Bama pub, he’s canceling ours in favor of theirs. It’s not over till it’s over, but it’ll take an Adam Schiff effort to put a positive spin on that.

Positive spin: He's already sold on us and doesn't really need to see anymore. He's only scheduling the Bama visit to placate dad and say he did his due diligence. :)

There won't be any sugarcoating it with any of the typical fan platitudes if we miss out on Hill.

Could be. I could see the dad insisting that he at least check out the Bama cookout. Not sure how many times he's visited both USC and Bama, but if he's taken a few visits to USC already it could just be to check the box for dad. I have gone through similar discussions with my daughter about college, and she has agreed to go on trips just to satisfy me. Granted, she's not a major D1 athlete. But the situation is similar. As a parent you just want them to make the best decision with the most information possible.........or, he gone.

He's been here 3x. So, yeah, there's not really much more you can learn. I can only find a reference to one official visit to Bama, but maybe he's been more times than that. But there are far more articles about him and USC than him and Bama, so there's just not as much Bama info out there that I can tell.

Jonathan Paylor will be committing on 8/5. He is ranked about the same (slightly higher) than Adams in the 2024 WR class. He is currently considered a strong lean to us by ON3 and 247.

If we can land Paylor and Hill, that will basically negate missing on Adams and Russell.

If you want some spin, I guess you could suggest that our coaches backed off Adams and Russel b/c they knew they had Paylor and Hill in the bag, both of whom are ranked slightly higher.

I've read VT offered Adams $100K in guaranteed NIL $. That's absurd, and I'm glad we didn't match it. If we're going to spend $100K on a WR, I'd rather get one from the portal.
