2nd game of season? What do I see - NFL players Taysom Hill at QB and Jamaal Williams at RB. Hill had 260 of 550 rush yards, Williams with 182. He is quick, strong lower body and great instincts running ball. Jamaal is strong runner and great pass catcher as well . Hard to hang this all on Diaz given they have had productive, long careers in NFL. That is some talent. UT lost starting RB in 1st qtr as well. Interesting how careers are made or broken in hindsight. Feel pretty good about Manny overall

Yes, sir! That was the game where Hill was wearing a knee brace and turned the Texas defense into the keystone cops. At one point in the third quarter I thought Manny was going to cry.

I’m not a big fan.

I remember watching his Miami team and seeing their behavior on the sidelines. They were unfocused front runners who had their heads handed to them. When things went bad they folded.

When in Rome..we had LawnBoyz. Institute a turnover tunic for all I care. Penn State must lead the country in dropped INTs during CJF's tenure. Game changing stuff that gets missed in headlines.

Without sharing too much I have had the good fortune to watch Manny in practice and sit in his LB meeting room. I came away very impressed. The guy is an outstanding teacher. I loved the way he is teaching tackling.
My wife, who was a teacher, came away very impressed too. In fact she was able to translate what was taught in the room to the practice field when we watched practice.

More like what you don't see. During the 2012 season, Diaz's Texas D ranked 67th nationally, giving up more than 400 yards a game on average., Okie St rang up 576, OU 677, and Baylor 607.

The 2013 BYU debacle was a continuation of the same. Alone, it probably didn't get Diaz fired; it was the proverbial straw.

Stats don’t matter. It was the time they found Manny hiding under the bench during nut cutting time, too scared to coach

I predict he won’t make it out of the locker room before kickoff of the PU game before he is fired.

you heard it here first.

Exactly.

Throughout his career, the composite "numbers" achieved by Diaz defenses have been, at best, nothing to write home about.
Four years at MTSU - defensive rankings of 63rd, 65th, 62nd, 49th (all based on points allowed)
One year at Mississippi State - 21st
Three years at Texas - 34th, 74th, 57th
One year at LaTech - 39th
Back to Mississippi State for one year - 37th
Six years at Miami, first three as DC - 12th, 28th, 18th (definitely Diaz's high-water mark), then three as HC - 23rd, 51st, 85th
Averages out to around 45th over 16 years as DC or HC

For comparison's sake, Brent Pry's six years as DC at PSU - 47th, 7th, 23rd, 8th, 55th, 7th
Averages out to around 24th over his six years

You've said this at least 3 times and offered no evidence.
I'll probably keep saying it because I believe the sourse that told me is this is accurate. The reason I believe my source is, he told me years ago this was Manny's MO. My source coached with him at NC State, and told me they found Manny hiding under the table in the press box at nut cutting time. And this was before anybody really knew who Manny Diaz was. He told me it was under the bench at Texas.
but do I have picutures? no, I just believe my friend of 40 yrs.

One blow out win or one blow out loss doesn't define a coach. Coaching at Texas never seems to be a stable job.

I think he is a great teacher and might fair a lot better getting out of that geographic region, he also has a pretty good defensive staff with experience to work with.

Nobody has won at Texas since they run off Mack Brown. They've went through how many hires?

I don't know that Diaz is HC material, but he's fared well at the places he's been for the talent that was on hand as a DC.

I have not followed Manny’s career that closely … All I know is that he screwed over Temple. But I do know that the jimmys and the joes win the games. Not the coaches.

Might have been the year when Miss St beat Michigan in the bowl game, was reading about Dan Mullen because he called Penn State his "dream job." After doing some digging, was disappointed to hear everyone crediting Manny Diaz (instead of Mullen) as the heart and soul of the coaching staff and one of the biggest rising stars in the game. That's when his name first registered in my mind but I agree that the results have been a little up and down. Hopefully the discipline within our Penn State program allows him to do his thing. Really enjoyed Brent Prys defenses but it got a little old watching our defense giving up late-game leads. Ready for some new blood with schemes predicated on creating big plays.

Frankly wasn't thrilled with this hire but I'm all for giving the guy a shot with good material... and he has some pretty fing good material. I like that he's aggressive and will challenge his guys to step up and go mano v mano. Now let's see how it translates on the field. Til we look pedestrian, i'm in his corner. He keeps us strong week in-week out, I'm a fan.

But the minute I see this team resemble miami's on the sideline, i'm out. Of course if we're shutting out osu and um I might be inclined to cut him some slack :)

I agree with the aspect of material. How does this group of defenders stack up with other places he has been? I bank on PSU having better talent than where he was prior. We also have a pretty good defensive backfield from the jump.

Coaches are only as good at their talent. He did great when he had the talent and didn't do well when he didn't. No different than most any other coach. This isn't rocket science. It's football. Coaches don't have some secret solution. His players at Miami played hard for him. He is a players coach and had some really good defenses that were great at getting turnovers at times. Not so good other times. The thing is going to be talent. Replacing it and acquiring it. This would be the case no matter who you hire.

That players play hard for him means a lot... and with time we'll see how he recruits his type of player and how that translates. Of course, if he's successful out the chute he'll probably be a HC in 2 years. Sigh.

Exactly and Miami fans are going to be hard on any coach that doesn't win but we can never say his guys quit on him. They always played very hard for him. Sometimes there were some talent deficits but his guys loved him.
