Carter’s body of work for his career is much stronger. Paris had a great year this year, but I believe has more losses over the last several years. Again, a case could be made for either, but who has the longer winning streak? Also, let’s be honest, the media fell in love with Parris, not so much with Carter. Carter has as much to do with that as anyone; he’s not the most humble guy and a lot of people don’t respond well to that.

Not a shocker result here. Starocci had a case for it though, to be sure, but Parris would have been my favorite if setting odds.
I get it. More wins this year and the sentimental side of going out and winning the title as a senior. But, Starocci has the better overall wrestling career stats on his side, i.e.: winning percentage; national titles and having beat a former NCAA champ. Maybe next year.

This is a terrible take by Carter. He might be an A+ wrestler but he is an F- on social media. He's not doing himself any favors here.
I don't think Carter cares...nor should he. He's had the better career...and its not even remotely close. Parris has 18 career losses. Starocci would have to have 9 careers to lose that much. Also, he had the better season. Sure Parris had more wins. But per Wrestlestat, Carter has the higher bonus % (66.67% to 63.64%) and RPI (.732 to .726). Mason won ONLY because Gable chose to not return.

Oh, but he could a been a D1 football player. LOL...not at Michigan football. They didn't offer.

I think you’re missing the point here. It’s not a matter of whether the selection was right or wrong or who should have won.

One of the criteria is sportsmanship……sorry low score doesn’t win. We love Carter, brash and cocky makes him great, but others certainly don’t view him that way. A 3x champion Thomas Gilman if you will.
I agree with those who say the Hodge tries to do too much.

It's not a lifetime achievement award. This year HWT was considerably stronger than 174, and Parris had a similar bonus rate in that stronger weight. Parris also won more convincingly against the top 8 guys -- Carter's only bonus all year against a medalist was his finals pin over Labriola. (That's also Carter's only career bonus over an NCAA medalist, and possibly his only career bonus over an NCAA top 16.)

6 of the top 8 HWTs won U17 and/or U20 world medals. Schultz also won SR Nationals over Coon. And R12 Slavikouski won bronze at SR Euros.

This had nothing to do with Carter's personality or the media loving Parris.

Where’s Lee? Carter is great. He’s honest and speaks his mind. We need more of that in todays world. And he backs it up! He ain’t impressed. He’s got bigger things to conquer. The guy has lost what 2 wrestling matches since his junior year of HS and has won 5 titles along the way. He could go down as the PSU GOAT! Don’t change CStar!

Parris beat #2 4-1 while Carter pinned #2. And I don’t remember 285 having an NCAA champion in its field like 174 did. If there was an NCAA champ in the field at 285, Parris would have taken 2nd. But I see your point about the rest of the field.

I get the sportsmanship thing. But Carter had a better past & a better career. I also get that the Hodge is a popularity contest & Carter hasn’t done himself any favors.

Apparently 'Past Credentials' is no longer a criteria. Which never made sense for an annual award.

Criteria for the Hodge includes a wrestler’s record, dominance/bonus-point percentage, quality of competition and sportsmanship.
According to Wikipedia, the change in criteria was made in 2022.

6 of the top 8 HWTs won medals at age group Worlds, and an R12 medaled at SR Euros.

Carter and Lewis are the only 174s ti have done so.
