Needed a meal in a hurry a few weeks ago and was right by a McD's, so hit up the drive through. I saw the price for the medium fry was $3,69. I thought this was surely a typo. Asked the lady at the window if the price was accurate and she exclaimed "yes, can you believe it?!?" A large fry is $4. Four bucks for fries at McD's. Who would have ever thought?

Price of a fast food meal from selections not on any kind of bargain menu can easily pass $20 for two people now. My wife and I now bust that at Arby's all the time.

This is how they cover the costs to pay $12-15 per hour. The consumer will always pay...until they won't, then the business changes or collapses.
Surely they can probably go down on the prices because most McDonald's have kiosks now which eliminates someone physically taking your order anymore. Greedy world we live in.

For sure. When we went on vacation back over spring break, we stopped at a Burger King. Family of 5 (kids ages 6, 4 and 1), we were close to $50.

I only worked at McDonald's for one week and do not know internal economics but can guess that they have a profit margin regardless of state of the economy. Until inflation gets back to under 2% and interest rates get back down, they have to cover the "cost of money" and do so by passing the cost to the consumer. The consumer does have a say...we could refuse to buy the product but the likely outcome will be a store closing sign.

Food and fuel prices have more than doubled in the last two years but "inflation is only 4%" or whatever the government propaganda is saying now. It's a racket and like others have said, prices won't be coming back down. Say goodbye to your favorite mom and pop restaurants and stores if things stay this way for the next few years, won't be long before we're officially in corporate feudalism.

It's insane the cost of food now. Fuel prices have come way down from where they were last year, but it hasn't translated to the food costs.

I can go back in my chickfila app to see past orders...on 2/22/18 the original sandwich meal was $5.99. Now it's $8.55. That's a 43% increase in 5 years.

on 6/8/21 the original sandwich meal was $6.95. The price increased 23% in the last 2 years.

On 4/12/22 the original sandwich meal was $7.69. The price increased 11% in the last year.

These kinds of increases just aren't sustainable. At some point there will be a reckoning.

Their job is to make money by holding real estate and jacking up the price of the potatoes they buy for pennies. This is how their stock is up 81% in 5 years. P.S. I like to buy potatoes and chicken for less than $1/pound and then cook them myself.

Mcdonalds had a net income of over 6 Billion dollars in 2022.

Employees wages were estimated to be $4.7 billion. They can double the pay of every single employee and they would still turn a profit

Maybe there are more factors at play than employees wanting a living wage

Not a reckoning, a market correction. When people stop paying the prices, the prices plateau. Their job is to make as much money as possible, not to keep prices low for consumers.

Of course the company wants to maximize its profits. I understand that. But these kinds of increases aren't normal. I was just pointing out how much prices have gone up in a relatively short period of time.

Playing off Prestonyte’s comment, I actually think prices were held abnormally low for decades (with ultra tight profit margins across the board that didn’t even move with inflation). Covid allowed companies to boost prices altogether without fear of reprisal as they did it in concert.

But now, however, I think they’re definitely reaching their peak, and like you said, these increases aren’t sustainable. Even now, I won’t take the family to chic-fil-a like we used to because the cost is way too high for fast food.

You are correct! Marketing costs, construction costs, operating expenses, cost of supplies, and all of these things cost more, including higher interest on money borrowed.

McDonald's responded to the increased cost of labor with a hard marketing campaign to use their app or the in-store kiosks to order food, resulting in less people being employed. When I worked at McD's years ago, you could easily find 5 to 6 registers, now it 2 to 3. Every company has a profit margin that they have to meet for investors, partners, etc., otherwise they lose value and investors go elsewhere.

They could double the salaries but it appears that they are reducing the staff to the absolute minimum instead.

Well, you've been a member for a week and you've become the first poster I've ever ignored, from GoGamecocks to CockyTalk to old FGF to new FGF.

Congrats.
I have been into this internet sports board thing since 1998. I have used the ignore function three times in those 25 years. All three were banished within the last two years. Posters haven't gotten worse but I have become less patient and more discriminating in the company I keep. No regrets.

The other day I grilled some sliced chicken breasts soaked in Italian dressing, fried up some bacon slices. Toasted some deli buns on the grill with a bit of butter. Added honey mustard and mayo on the buns, swiss cheese tomato and lettuce, black pepper, and made some chicken and bacon sandwiches with baked potato chips and dill pickles. Got enough for 8 sandwiches to eat, all for around $20......
