Annual reminder. Memorial Day is this Monday. It is a solemn day to remember those in the military who died while serving to protect their country. Our country. It is not a day to wish a veteran a happy holiday or to thank us for our service. That would be Veterans Day on November 11. The people to be thanked on Memorial Day are those who “gave the last full measure of devotion.”

That’s asking a lot of a majority of this country. But well said.

I‘m dumb, so here it goes. I get not wishing a veteran a “Happy Memorial Day” or telling them to enjoy their Memorial Day. However, what’s wrong with thanking them for their service? That seems like a respectful thing to say at any time. I don’t see it as disrespectful towards those who gave their lives while serving. Can we not honor those who gave their lives and still thank those who served or are currently serving?

Sure - but, Memorial Day isn’t about thanking veterans. It’s about remembering those who died in service of their country. So, not totally inappropriate, but not the point of Memorial Day.

Speaking for myself, I'd prefer not to have someone say it to me on Memorial Day (and I have had people say it)- it's not our day, it's for those of us who never made it home.

Thanks. This makes sense. I’ve heard some treat it like a faux pas, like “How dare you?”.

The way I look at it, as it stands, 365 days a year are great days to than a veteran or remember the fallen, however 30May is SPECIFICALLY for the fallen, and 11NOV is SPECIFICALLY for the veterans. I used to be one of those that corrected people with malice however I’ve softened and realized that most people not of a military background just don’t really understand the difference. So at this point in my life I say “thank you sir/ma’am. I very much appreciate that. However remember that today is a memorial for those who never made it home. My day is 11 Nov”.

Again….. EVERY day is a good day to thank a veteran……. EXCEPT for tomorrow. That’s the one day that it is but isn’t appropriate.

I held a Veteran’s Day program when I was still teaching. At the conclusion, the Veterans sat and talked with my students.
My father spoke up and told the class and other Veterans, the real heroes never came home.
Each Veteran either nodded or verbally agreed.
God bless those men and women.

I watched the Memorial Day concert last night on PBS, it was very well done and very moving/emotional.
It always is, and thank you for reminding me… I forgot to watch it last night. I’ll stream it sometime today.

So, my in-laws are from Bucks Co. and every year they go to the local Memorial Day parade with the grandkids. They sent me some video of it and there are string bands, fire trucks, local politicians in convertibles, etc. I'm sort of mixed on whether or not this kind of parade is appropriate for a holiday about remembrance and loss. Am I being too sensitive? I think a concert or military band is appropriate - just not sure about Mummers and more 'celebratory' efforts....

I know the difference totally. My dad made it back as a Navy pilot but my uncle is buried in France - he was on a bomber that went down. I have a shirt devoted to their memory on back and front honoring others who survived. I have had on occasion some negative comments from some people, but most are positive.
