I didn't know where to put this because it pertains to both of our teams so I started a new thread. Can someone please explain to me why our post players come out to the foul line or top of the key to help guard a smaller player dribbling on the outside. It makes no sense to me and it appears to be detrimental to our defense when they do this. For one, it leaves the player they are supposed to be guarding wide open to receive a pass for an open layup. It also takes the taller player away from the basket and a potential blockout or rebound. I just don't understand this philosophy as it rarely leads to a turnover. The guys started it first but it appears the girls are following suit. Why in the world would we want Camilla playing 10-15+ feet away from the basket? Help me please....

Because the player Cardoso is defending can set a screen and then the smaller player will have a wide open look from 3. Cardoso usually just "shows" on screens, meaning the smaller player cannot shoot an uncontested 3 and will have to dribble around her. In that time the original defender and can recover from the screen and get back on the smaller player. So Cardoso doesn't switch a screen on to a smaller player. She recovers back to the big she was initially guarding after she show. Considering our defense is historically good, I don't think we can say it's ineffective.

As far as the men, I don't watch enough of their games to comment.

To add to what Vienna said, you have to stop the ball. If you don’t have the big hedge in some fashion (can be a quick show, hard hedge, or drop coverage to guard two) you have a guard coming downhill at the rim unimpeded and most likely get your bigs in foul trouble.

I wish I were technically savvy enough to be able post a video of what I am referencing. It happened several times in the women's game today. I get what y'all are saying and appreciate the explanation but I would rather take my chances of them hitting a three or having a guard coming downhill into a big. What I don't like seeing their big 2 steps in front heading for an uncontested layup.

Here you see the Tennessee big that Sakima Walker is guarding step out to the perimeter and screen Raven. Botched defense by Walker. She doesn't get out to challenge a very good 3 point shooter in Jewel Spear. The only player who could challenge Spear in that situation is a our big.
