Have any of you ever been to a game at an off-color field? I've been to 3-4 at Tupelo. It's jarring at first sight but after the game gets going you really don't notice it much. It's worse on TV than it is in person.

How was Meridian of all places able to foot the bill for that?

Even "the best" turf STILL gets complaints from NFL players. NONE of them like it. Still can't replace real grass. Time to outlaw that schit till they figger out how to make it non injury prone. Painting it blue is like a tattoo on a fake rack saying "Not" on one and "Real" on the other.

I feel like I’m encroaching on @Hugh's Burner Phone territory here but… **

Don’t understand why anybody would do that in MS. I’ve been on Brandon’s field plenty and that shlt is hot and smells like assssss.

And you have to replace it every decade, with routine cleaning to get the staph n shlt off.

No more MHS games for me. Come to think of it I think Bob Tyler was the coach when I last attended. Oh well….they probably won’t miss me.

Meridian, and the school system, certainly has deteriorated since I was there (50s and 60s). The blue field is an abomination, even though their colors are blue and white.

Amory has put in a turf field after their stadium was destroyed in the March 2022 tornado. At least it's green but everything surrounding it is black. I know high schools play at night but can you imagine how hot the sidelines will be for those late August early September games?

Ole Miss is planning on replacing their green turf with a powder blue one with a center piece "Landshark Logo".

Meridian high is also putting in a on campus baseball field I heard. Think this is some money from fed pockets.

Why would any HS football field in Mississippi need artificial turf?

When you take drainage and maintenance into account, it's actually said by those in charge to be a little cheaper on the upkeep, especially somewhere like Tupelo (where I'm from) that has herds of people using it in every season all year long. Football, soccer, band, track, etc.

Although I hate the fake stuff, I understand why they do it. The new stadium at Hernando will have it because it’s multipurpose. Soccer is huge at the school now and it was tearing up the old field because of the timing of soccer season.

Every school and most parks around me are all transitioning to turf. High initial costs, but it eventually becomes cheaper. They are hotter in the dead of summer for sure. You do get more consistent play. Every time we play on a grass field, you see appreciate the consistency of turf. You don’t have to worry about low spots and dirt holes. Especially for sports like lacrosse and soccer. The only real work you have to do is add more rubber pellets a couple times a year. I’m sure the turf company does it for you. Gone are the days of the head football coach also being the landscaper.

a new turf field costs right at $1,000,000 now. They will tell you up front not to expect more than a 10 year life cycle out of it. So, you'd have to spend $100,000 a year on a natural turf field to justify the cost. and that is at today's cost. 10 years from now, a new turf field could cost $1.25 MM or more, given inflation over that ten year span. so really, a natural turf field would have to cost you $125,000 a year to justify the cost of a turf field. if you're doing it purely on a cost basis.
