Would it be a safe assumption on my part to conclude that you are now the poster formerly known on the old board as RickinDayton?

And that you’re a Sparty fan?
Why would you assume that he was a MSU fan? He’s just posting facts, and wasn’t celebrating in the slightest. As to someone responding to this with a “Why post this here?” my own reaction was that this might represent further indication that PSU is falling behind their three big in-division rivals. Rick has been posting for years and all of a sudden he’s a Sparty fan? GMAB.

Definitely seems to be part of his 'recruiting' plan. Dont need 20+ freshmen a year, just take 15 and find 5-10 in the portal.
Sounds like a fairly sound plan to me. Not much different than the NFL draft and free agency period. Pick up some experienced players and some rookies. At a minimum the portal guys will have at least been through a year of attending classes, which is a big adjustment for some.

It’s still a crap shoot. Not every portal player is a super talented athlete buried on the depth chart. Some are problem children. And the team they are leaving is pleased to see them go.

It must be part of his plan, but when you bring in too many portal guys wouldn't some HS coaches close the door on you?
Yeah, I wonder too about how the traditionally recruited kids feel about portal guys "cutting in line" in front of them. Might just cause some of them to go to a different school?

I would like to see this blow up in sparty’s face - where high school recruits see what they’re doing and they become extremely reliant on the portal. That’ll be extremely tough to manage long term…..jackasses

this is pretty much what most of the better media analysts who were coaches are saying. it is quick fix to recover a program but not a long play. maybe Mel is just figuring he will go 2-3* HS recruits and portal guys blended on a year to year basis. He has created quite an organization that is executing his portal recruiting. they have caught on to how fast moving it is also.

Which is why Franklin has said on multiple occasions that he prefers to pursue portal players that he and his staff are already familiar with, that they either pursued when they were coming out of high school, or through some other connection such as they came to camp at PSU, they were team mates of someone that they were pursuing and they also checked them out when they were at their high school recruiting,.....

And this seems to limit the field considerably when looking at all the players in the portal, and then those that are talented enough and a good fit for the team.... Which makes the success that Franklin had with portal players for 2021 all the more extraordinary.

Getting players out of high school isn't a crap shoot? Players coming through the portal probably have game tape and college grades earned while playing football, something a high school player won't have. Certainly, problem children are likely to end up in the portal. But also in the portal will be people who were under-recruited out of high school or who developed a little later. And players who didn't fit their new coach's scheme. And players who graduated and want to use an extra year of eligibility.

Yes everyone is a crap shoot. Agree with the scenarios you described. The OU QB is a good example.
I’d rather build my team through recruiting, where kids come in and I can coach them to fit into their roles and develop team first attitude, etc. I believe that has a higher likelihood of success vs a team of kids with 1 year left, who are only there because they can fill a roster spot, and no one remembers them after they leave.

Russell Wilson played for Wisconsin one year. I think they remember him.

I think filling holes in your roster with the portal is excellent. If you are able to target and secure the kids you want, by all means do so.

I think in time, the holes you have should lessen if you are recruiting HS kids at a high level. 10 per year should drop to 5 at some point unless your HS kids are more miss than hit.

I'd like to see more data points than one 11 win season though before I anoint Tucker anything. The Buckeyes throttled them. They benefit from a fumble by the Wolverines 2 QB system. Close wins vs us, Indiana, and Nebraska. Solid loss to Purdue.
