If this edge from USCe is asking, $1.5 million, it's going to be interesting to see what these guys ask.

Let’s just roll with Shapen and really pay one of these dudes - it’s what we need. These guys are looking for the money.
A lot of college programs are about to find out about something that European soccer teams know all too well, blowing your wage structure and what it can do to team chemistry.

if the $$$ is right and a place to play, they may just come here. We do have starting positions in the SEC to sell against the best teams. Pay 'em. This is what we've been saving for.

The rate of 5 stars entering the portal is extremely concerning. I get that they're the kids that other teams want the most, but transferring at this rate isn't good for the players.

The NCAA needs to step up and put guardrails on this. It's the wild west right now.

I'm not surprised at 5 stars entering the portal though. If they're a) not running first team on the depth chart, and/or b) could demand more money in the portal, the current structure allows for them to do it.

Some type of lock-in would actually benefit them and their image with potential nfl teams. Seeing kids exit at the slightest of whims can’t be a good look of commitment. There should be buy-outs tied to NIL deals or the new revenue sharing deals. Want to be able to move around like coaches? You’ll be tied to buy-outs like coaches.

If you’re a star for your team with the way this is all set up right now it’s a no brainer to put your name out there to either get someone to bite on paying you more or getting your current school to pay you more.

These guys have watched coaches do it for years with Jimmy Sexton.

Two areas we should sell hard are early playing time and development. Focus on freshmen and sophomores who can make an impact and prep them for a big payday in a year or two after they prove themselves against top competition. At least that’s the angle I’d take, and if they want to leave for more money as a junior then go for it.

What's wild is that they are opting to play another year of college football instead of going to the NFL.

I guess I see it opposite.

Seems to me, every freshman we get that performs well, is gone the next year. I don't see how you build a program like that.

If I were States GM, sign who you can out of HS, keep a heavy eye on the portal for upper classmen.

if State can only get one or two years out of a player, best to get players that are ready to play day one.

Just FYI, bama is in desperate need of DLs. The market will be utterly ridiculous.

I’m talking about players who are ready day one for a 7-8 win team but not ready to be the guy in their position for a 10+ win team. Get younger high impact players and go with known upper class men for your stable. workhorses.

They can't. They've lost all their power by losing lawsuits filed due to their own stubbornness. The best we can hope for at this point is if Congress creates some NIL legislation, but the NCAA itself cant do anything.

You'd almost rather a 5 star go somewhere else out of HS, let them get pissed at not playing as a FR, & then get them in years 2 and 3 to transfer to you

Who are you talking about?
The mizzou guy, Nwaneri, is a freshman. He is at least another 2 years away from the draft.

Are you thinking he and others that are in their 1st or 2nd year of college should quit and just work out privately for the next 16 to 28 months?

Keep in mind that, for a lot of these guys, "putting their name in the portal" is nothing more than a negotiating tactic to get more money out of their current team. No different than Jimmy Sexton feigning interest for his HC's to get their current schools to pony up more cash.

Just because their "name is in the portal" doesn't mean they're going anywhere.

True, for the stars and productive ones.
For everyone else though, even the high 3* guys, the current school is no longer obligated to keep you even if you remove your name from the portal. That seems to happen a lot in football and basketball.

I would love to see more schools take the approach of "if you enter the portal, you're gone", but probably only the true blue bloods could afford to take that stance.

How do we sell development with the apparent incompetence on the defensive side coaching? My concern is that anyone looking at that train wreck won’t want to be “developed “ by them.

I’m not sure development will sell regardless. This free agency has taken a normal trait for theses young men, myopathy, and given them a perfect avenues to make decisions that are bad for them and the schools.

Imagine this set of rules during the Jones/Simmons/Autry/Sweat years…man it makes me sad just to look at that list and know what we have now!

Those guys made their money just under the table. Opening it up with NIL did up the ante though.

It is nice that they have to pay taxes like the rest of us.

It could be.
