And he'll be a damn good one. This guy may be the best player yet in this class. This from BDJ, from a rivals LSU site:
<div id="post_message_14785"> MONTRELL CONNER (uncommitted)
RUNNING BACK (6-2, 215)
Ouachita Parish High School
Conner has probably stirred up more debate among LSU fans than any other in-state prospect in the Class of 2009. For one thing, his ranking varies widely. Conner is ranked as a four-star and the No. 31 RB in the nation by Scout. Rivals pegs Conner as the No. 19 Athlete in the country, as well as the No. 11 player in preseason Louisiana rankings. However, TigerBait.com (a Rivals site) recently ranked Conner as the No. 30 player in the State of Louisiana.
LSU, which has not offered, is rumored to be interested (or has been interested) in Conner as a linebacker, but the big back from Monroe is evidently intent on playing RB in college. Conner's offer sheet varies, depending on which recruiting service you look at - if you combine the two together, he reportedly has offers from USC, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, and others. However, the talk coming out of Monroe seems to indicate that Miss. St. is the team to beat for Conner's services.
On film, Conner reminds you of a young, raw, Adrian Peterson. He does the bulk of his running out of one-back and I-sets and he reaches full speed in a hurry. He's listed as having 4.4 speed, although he's never been timed at a camp or combine (that has been made public).
While the bruising runner runs too upright, he's able to get away with it in high school because he is simply too big and strong (335 bench, 475 squat) for much of the opposition. When Conner breaks into the clear, he is able to brush off many defenders with relative ease - especially on attempted tackles above the waist.
Shows a nice spin move and does run lower at times, especially in goal-line sets. Is brutally effective with his stiff-arm. Is a good student with a 3.0 gpa. Rushed for approximately 1,300 yards and 22 TDs as a junior. It should be noted that Ouachita completely changed its offensive scheme after Conner broke into the starting lineup as a sophomore. Prior to his arrival, the Lions were a true spread team.
Hands have to be considered a question mark at this point, as OPHS simply doesn't throw him the football (at least on film). While Conner breaks many tackles, he is impatient at times - and often outruns his blockers. Doesn't appear to be quite as fast as the listed 4.4 speed.
OPHS is a 5A school that reached the first round of the playoffs last year as a No. 31 seed (lost 42-7 to St. Thomas More). Key games this year include home tilts in Weeks Four and Six versus district foes West Monroe and Ruston.
BOTTOM LINE: Conner is a raw tailback-type with enormous talent. He'll continue to develop and should be a star workhorse back in college. </div>
