UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State ranks in the top 50 in 16 subject area rankings and in the top 100 in the world in an additional 14 subjects, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), which released its 2022 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects(GRAS) on July 25.
According to its website, GRAS evaluates the performance of world universities in relevant subjects, using a number of metrics including research output, research influence, international collaboration, research quality, and international academic awards.
The 2022 GRAS contains rankings of universities in 54 subjects across the broad categories of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
More than 1,800 universities across 96 countries and regions are listed in this year’s rankings.
Penn State ranked in the top 50 of the following subject areas:

  • Statistics (30)
  • Chemical Engineering (32)
  • Metallurgical Engineering (43)
  • Earth Sciences (46)
  • Aerospace Engineering (49)

In addition, the University ranked in the top 100 in 14 additional subject areas, including:

  • Ag Sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Finance
  • Geography
  • Law
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
  • Physics
  • Water Resources
  • Biotechnology
  • Economics

“Penn State having 16 subject areas in the top 50 and 30 different subjects in the Top 100 in the 2022 ARWU Rankings by Subject confirms the outstanding scholarship and research undertaken, as well as the deep commitment across the faculty and staff to the outcomes and impacts of a world class land-grant university,” said Roger Brindley, vice provost for Global. “I'm particularly impressed by the broad interdisciplinarity evident in these subject rankings. It speaks to the academic and research excellence found across the whole Penn State community.”

ARWU began to publish world university rankings by academic subjects in 2009, and also are known as the Shanghai Rankings, as the organization is based in Shanghai, China.

That Barry guy's head just exploded. I'm sure he'll try to find a way to disparage the university he now represents.

If the admin wants to be true to the mission, we should be in the Agricultural Sciences top 50 considering that’s one of the disciples for which the university was founded. Unfortunately ag funding is often on the chopping block when cuts need to be made. 🤷🏼‍♂️

In other news, Penn State is ranked #1 in wrestling.

Is there ever going to be a time when Penn State is ranked #1 in football?

Stop embarrassing yourself and grow up.
I'm not the one supporting a guy who hurls homophobic slurs and other unacceptable derogatory terms while otherwise being unable to control himself, as he promotes himself under a pseudonym, without disclosing that he's, in fact, that person. And he does this all while trying to manufacture problems and then suggest unrealistic solutions to the manufactured problems. And I'm not the one raging against driving with the flow of traffic, as if that driver was committing a mortal sin, and getting all worked up over absolutely nothing.

Get yourself under control.

You're not familiar with working with the Chinese. They choose the result and make the data fit, every time.

Did you even take the time to click on the link and look at the criteria? It is all able to be verified by pretty much anyone with the time to do it.

Which criteria do you think should carry more weight? Number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index or the how university presidents, provosts and deans of admissions rank other universities?

You guys are nuts. So, because you want to attack PSU, you'll try to attack any information that doesn't fit that narrative, no matter how stupid you sound. Talk about choosing the result and making the data fit ... "But it's from China! and everyone knows they screw with data to get their desired result ... which explains PSU lofty rankings here! They are conspiring with the evil BOT!"

So if I supported a bad person with an axe to grind for BOT, and if I slowed down traffic and created a safety hazard, and if I tried to discredit information just based on wild accusations with no evidence or analysis to support it, I'd have the plethora of friends you have? That's your story and you're sticking to it?

Yes, I read the article. When you get to select the "subjects", the categories and the weightings you can completely control the outcome. I'm actually surprised Penn State was ranked so low with the criteria given. I was shocked:rolleyes: to see that Chinese Universities came in with the second most number of ranked subjects.

I made no reference to other rankings. I do however have a lot of experience working with the Chinese and am quite confident that the outcomes were chosen before the categories, subjects, and weightings were determined.

One thing I noted if that we are ranked 14 in Materials Science and Engineering and 43 in Metallurgical Engineering. But we do not have Metallurgy as a major anymore. The Metallurgy department was merged into Materials Science and Engineering with Metallurgy as a area of concentration. The other areas of concentration, Ceramics and Polymers did not get mentioned. Is the Metallurgy area of concentration that much better than the other areas of concentration?

All I know is back in the time just before and just after I graduated, Penn State Mechanical Engineering was consistently ranked in the 8-12 range.

Top 100....meh.

Talk to the potato farmer Eckel in NEPA who was once on the BOT. Perhaps we will donate some money.

Were the Chinese trying to list the universities easiest to spy on, or maybe the universities with the most stuff worth stealing?

FYI, I get a 404 error.

My experience is with industry not academics. However, it wouldn't surprise me if academics are the next "industry" the Chinese are targeting.

They've been targeting academics for a long time, and the universities are fine with it.

I wouldn’t get too hung up on the details because it’s a tall task to map each school’s structure into a common framework.

Actually, if Metallurgy is broken out at number 43 than the number 14 rating for Materials Science must actually be for Ceramics and Polymers. This means that Metallurgy is dragging down the Materials Science major.

I'm quite disappointed in that response. Shocking that Penn State's version of the Shell Answer man has nothing here. I can remember you lauding that dept. many years ago and knowing quite a bit about it. Stunning development. :)

I think you need to vacuum the cobwebs out of your head. Architetural Engineering is an entirely different academic department in an entirely different college than Architecture or Landscape Architecture. But thanks for the innacurate trip down memory lane.

I know and understand all that. It's also true that you were in the know at one time. Alas. No more. :) Anyway, PSU's undergrad AE was once a highly rated program.

Kindly provide my posts where I professed to be in the know of the ins and outs of the PSU AE department. I'm sure that I mentioned a few AE courses that I took or AE professors that I had, but I never professed to be an AE insider. Do that, and I will apologize for my false propaganda.
