Shades of Jimmy Johns:

Phillips said Monday that Mississippi State is recruiting him as a wide receiver and he was willing to play the position. Ole Miss has recruited Phillips more as a quarterback/athlete. Phillips said one of the reasons he had such immediate buyer's remorse was because of his strong feelings about playing quarterback.

"That's really why I want to go to Ole Miss' camp," Phillips said. "I want to play quarterback. I'm used to playing that position. I've been playing that position since sixth grade. That kind of has me thinking about my decision."

Phillips said he's gotten limited local reaction since Monday's announcement.

"I really didn't talk to anybody," Phillips said. "I made the decision and then went to Water Valley. I am going to go down to town today. I was in the dentist office this morning and some guy told me I had made a dumb decision. I don't think he knew I'd changed my mind."

The conversation with the stranger in the dentist's office wasn't the only uncomfortable one he'll have today. Phillips said he'll call the Mississippi State staff tonight to inform them of his change of heart.

"It's 50-50," Phillips said, when asked what he'll tell the Bulldogs' coaches. "I'm committed to State, but I still have an open mind."
And "Stranger in the dentist's office" = cover for Mississippi athletic booster.

Also, Montez my man, you don't need to fret about calling Croom to break the news to him. He knows. But way to man up and let him know before broadcasting it to yancey and mcready.

Also, there's a 50-50 chance you won't have an offer come Feb. when you decide what's best for Montez.

Montez, ask Lee Chambers and LeBrandon Glover how that worked out for them.

No way we pursue this guy when we're on a half dozen equally or more talented guys at WR. Pre-Ashley/Johns/insert-other-player-who-backed-out-here we may have kept hope alive for him. But not now.

goddam it, when is Croom going to learn that when you recruit a WR/RB/DB who's playing QB in HS and wants to play QB in college, you recruit his *** as a QB? 3/4 of the time he'll figure out on his own that he needs to play another position and move voluntarily. For the 1/4 who won't do that, you just treat him like Saban treated Johns. Basically, tell him that it's either change positions or sit on the end of the bench and just hope like hell your scholarship gets renewed.

Uh-oh. 'Crooms' is about to become 'Croom$' in yanceyworld. ***

Shmuley a day later:

And "Stranger in the dentist's office" = cover for Mississippi athletic booster.

So just to get this straight, when someone commits to you, you make fun of other school's fans that might suggest funny business. Then, when that same player decommits, you turn into the exact person you made fun of just 24 hours earlier, accusing another school of funny business? Very nicely done. I'm impressed.

for your input on yet another recruiting thread that you don't follow.

Stick around, though, because you will be able to continue not following many more twists and turns of the recruiting saga that will unfold between now and February, with many accusations of cheating and improper influence. Take heart, though, as not all of the accusations will be mine.

To answer your recruiting question, even though you're not following recruiting: Yes, I am accusing McReady of using the phrase "stranger in the dentist's office" as a not-too-clever cover for the dentist booster's improper contact with a recruit.

An Oxford player commits to state and it's because Croom is such a great recruiter, a day later when he decommits Ole Miss cheated! God I hate people that get this hung up over July recruiting.

It's always good to have you around as a reminder of one of the most classic 6 pack Casey Dick threads.

First off, it's not like I had to dig too deep into the archives. Your post from yesterday was still on the front page of the board.

Secondly, I posted it because I was making my point of how stupid it is to get too up and down about recruiting in July. You were a prime example of someone who obviously gets too worked up over this stuff.

17 year old because he/she didn't like the decision. I think it's amazing how the Super Rebel Justice Team leaps into action at a minutes notice.

is that your sole purpose in life to make people aware that they are stupid for following recruiting in July? If people want to follow recruiting all year (the whole damn reason rivals and scout exist) then get the %*+# over it.

But if you do that after the 1st or second year, haven't you actually wasted a scholarship for 1-2 years when you could have given it to someone who actually wants to play WR for you from the beginning?

You generally move the player in the spring after his redshirt season, not wasting any scholarship time at all. But even if you did waste a year of eligibility, having the player for 3 productive years would be better than having him for none.

I know you like being the mediator for recruiting but do you have to jump into every thread with the same ole ********. I mean everyone knows you follow recruiting but don't care until feb. Everyone knows that it's July and signing day is Feb. Everyone knows that Nutt is being taken to the woodshed on mississippi recruits because we had a winning season and Croom has built relationships with coaches for 5 years and Ole Miss had a losing season. Whether you realize it or not IT'S #*$!%%+ SUMMER. There's not a lot to talk about or get excited about except our July committments. We know that none of them will stick and will sign with other schools, because well, it's July and we are just a back up plan for most of these recruits until signing day which is in Feb. in case no one else knew that. I promise you no one is "too worked" on the possibility of losing a 1 star (we know stars don't mean **** to you) QB turned WR when we have the likes of Pat Patterson committed and Chris Smith whose natural positions are WR. And yes we know that Pat and Chris are waiting for greener pastures and will leave us in a cloud of dust like Chris "I will be sitting on the bench my whole college career" Garrett. We have 10 3* and 1 4* per scout (Again we know the stars don't mean ****), so I doubt anyone is really getting too worked up on the possibility of losing a QB that will have to learn to play receiver in college because he has the fantasy of playing QB in the SEC(which most likely won't work out and end up screwing up his chance to be a good college receiver), because well, he's been doing it since 6th grade. **** I played marbles in 6th grade but you don't see me being a professional marble player do you Montez? Sorry didn't mean to get too worked up, Bruiser.

Today we salute you Mr. College Recruiting Mediator Guy
Mr. College Recruiting Mediator Guy
with your quick replies that signing day is in Feb. and it's only July. No one will make you think July is a good time to commit.
Signing day is still seven months away.
Whenever someone gets too excited over a recruit, you are there to calmly tell them that they will be looking for greener pastures come Feb.
You're school is just a backup plan
Or when someone get down over losing a recruit, you will be there to tell them to step away from the ledge, it's not worth getting worked up over it
Don't do it
So here's to you Mr. College Recruiting Mediator Guy for not following recruiting, but for following recruiting and giving your expert opinion to those that don't care for it

more power to him if he thinks he can play the position he has played since 6th grade at another school. I think he has a snowballs chance in hell of playing qb in the sec and he should go ahead and make the move that most people think he naturally fits, but that's not the point.

I want every good player we can sign away from OM, but regrets are tough to live with so for his sake if he thinks that's the right move, have at it. </p>

The best part of this thread is that you got owned by "Ronny Bruiser". Now, why don't you "man up" and STFU or just admit it, Hebrewlicious.

The players will be growing and changing with the new experience. However, I would prefer that Croom not join hands with the coaches that mislead recruits. Of courses it's true that the HS QB will probably happily catch the football for SEC glory, but people have got to trust the leaders they lay it down for.
