More terrible “solutions” looming for college football

Latest proposals to fix bowl season that are picking up steam are playing bowl games in the spring or Week 0.

Main selling point is you guarantee full participation, but I doubt that. If folks think bowl games don’t matter now, they’ll matter even less when they actually are spring or preseason exhibition games. No chances coaches will risk injury to key players in a spring game or Week 0 game. And you screw over the senior players from the previous season who are no longer on the team and don’t get a chance to play in the game.

That said, it’s such a stupid idea, it’s almost a certainty that’s what they’ll end up doing.

I have long said we should have exhibitions instead of a spring game. Much better judge of where you are. Way more beneficial to the teams perfect timing for the bowls. It could restore bowl games.

then make the only transfer period after the spring. High school commits commit only at the early signing. The February date can be killed.

Wouldn't change the essential reality. You still wouldn't be fielding the team that earned the bowl bid. It's patently stupid.

Don’t base it off the previous season. Let the playoff committee huddle who is coming back and who left. Try to put fun matchups against each other cross conference

I hate this idea. I'd prefer making players sign contracts for their NIL money with total participation clauses. If you opt out of your team's bowl, you have to return all the money. Players would then have to play for only their scholarships if they cannot commit to playing the whole season.

In other words, bowls would no longer serve as incentives any way at all. The move now is to deemphasize the role of the playoff committee, not to expand it. Also, bowls are partly about fans making trips - many of them family trips - during the holiday season. That custom would be undone.

We already have several OOC, neutral field kickoff games, most of them featuring interesting programs. Your suggestion is imaginative, but it doesn't have anything to do with bowls. I don't think it will find a lodging place.

Well, pretty much every decision made by college football powers that be in the last decade has been patently stupid.

Bowl games played by third and fourth stringers would do nothing whatsoever in any way imaginable to restore bowl games.

In the spring after spring practice, you wouldn’t have opt outs.
No, but there is absolutely zero chance any coach would risk injury to key players at that point. Starters might get a series just like a spring game and then you’d have scrubs playing the rest of the game.

We need to stop with stupid spring games that mean absolutely nothing from the standpoint of getting better. It seems like someone gets hurt every year during this game. My suggestion would be to have a 7 on 7 on both ends of the field and let the linemen call plays. This would be extremely entertaining and would most likely keep everyone healthy. Someone call Shane and set it up.

I could go for that.
