This may seem very "get off my lawn", but has anyone else noticed how many psu players do not wear mouthpieces? I remember in high school having refs yell at us to put them in- I guess collegiate refs don't care? Hard to think this shouldn't be a point of emphasis among the staff, given the prevalence of injuries

I think you have to wear mouthpieces in college…
Tons of players do not. I suspect the rule is that they have to have a mouthpiece as part of the uniform. A large number of players have them on their facemask but never actually put it in their mouth. I'd think a dangling mouthpiece bouncing around while running would be really distracting.

Why is this even an issue? Let them get their teeth knocked out if they chose to do so. My take is it restricts their breathing which can get them gassed so let them choose. It's only teeth. They make new ones every day.

Mouth pieces are more to help against concussions than loss of teeth. It’s a cushion between their jaw crashing against their upper part of the mouth/skull. It does not in anyway restrict breathing.

I’m amazed at how many mouthpieces fall on the ground each game.

Use a strap so that you don’t need to pick it up off the ground after you’ve had your slobber knocked.

Depends on which kind and what position they play. Anything foreign in a mouth restricts breathing, safety or not.

In truest form, yes, anything you put in your mouth would restrict breathing to an extent. But, I never had a problem with it and never had a player complain to me about restriction.
In VA, as i remember happening in PA, officials will stop play to warn players.
I had coaches who would just go nuts if they saw it hanging.

It's not being enforced anymore. I agree about the concussion stuff but if the NCAA starts to mandate concussion safety college football as you know it is done.

How can you say the NCAA is not mandating concussion safety when they enforce targeting rules? As a matter of fact, I would say the sole reason the NCAA has put in targeting rules is so that down the line they can say they have tried to improve player safety.

If one of these lawsuits gets in front of the right judge, the party's over.

And THAT'S why players need a good mouthpiece
Agree. But the lack of enforcement with mouthpieces is a symptom of the NCAA's lack of seriousness on the topic. If they ignore it, apparently it will go away just like what happened to NIL and transfer portal.
