Went to the 40th anniversary re-release. It looked fantastic and the sound was excellent. I've said it many times, but imho sound has a more significant impact on a movie than visuals. This one managed to nail them both. While I'm at it, between the lighting, shadows, sheen, etc. practical effects pulled off properly trump computer generated special effects any day in my world. The models looked fantastic, the lighting on them was superb, and the pacing and angles of the movements perfectly built tension.

The movie included a few extended scenes that had more dialog but did not fundamentally change anything. I had seen a few previously in some broadcast and special edition disc so nothing was really new. I actually prefer the original cuts of the scenes - they are very tight and flow a little faster. The extra exposition simply didn't add enough.

Ricardo Montebon - he really benefited from the big screen. His facial muscles twitched exquisitely with every drop of Khan's constrained rage, his plastic chest glistened as he strutted about, and he commanded every scene he was in. (Fun fact - his chest isn't really plastic). He should have won an Oscar for that performance.

William Shatner - perfectly nailed his performance - both cocky and a bit melancholy at his station in life. Just a great performance all around.

While the extra exposition isn't necessary, it only detracts from the movie a little. I still give this movie a strong A+ and it remains possibly the greatest sci-fi movie ever, and definitely a top 10 in any category for me.

After the credits there was a TCM addendum where they discussed the movie. Nothing really earth shattering but interesting to hear how the producers thought Gene Roddenberry was the source of the leak of Spock's death since he was so adamantly opposed to it and wanted it changed.

Bonus Star Trek material created by a fan of newer series scenes remade in the Animated series style with filmation effects and audio:

A true classic.

At the age of 11 I was massively freaked out when Khan had those slug creatures crawl into the ears of Chekhov and the other guy. Ugh!
