Croom on Dixon, "He's feeling good that he got 1,000 yards, but I told him he left 500 on the table." NOW do you guys believe us?

Do I believe what? That Dixon didn't get the job done last year? Hell yes, I believe that. And our head coach just backed me up on it.

That Croom quote is old. He's said it all along. I thought Dixon had a fine year last year, but he can do a lot better. He can do better, I think he will do better, and he'll be one of the best backs in the SEC this year.

Croom also said (paraphrased): Dixon could go pro after three years. He's that good.

And he's right, as are you. If Dixon plays to his potential, he'll be 1st team All-SEC. But Coach and I are right too that his production last year (and in 2006) was very average.

You're stupid if you think a 1000 yard season in the SEC (especially at MSU) is average. Sure he could have done better, but he was much better than average.

I know the thread that you are referring to, but is there anyone that doesn't think Dixon left a lot of yards on the field last season? What is it that you are fishing for?

Yeah, I was just saying that most people had probably heard the quote before that long *** thread. I think most people would agree that Dixon needs to play better for this to be considered a "good" junior year. The difference is that most expect him to, and (not trying to put words in his mouth but..) it didn't sound like Coach did so much.

in regards to THIS SEASON: He has the talent to put 1200-1500 yards up. The question is will he do it? I, like others, choose to think he will, or at least have a better ypc. Coach34 thinks he's over-rated and one of the worst starting RBs in the SEC.

The debate wasn't whether Dixon underachieved in 07, it was where do you rank him THIS YEAR.

we played 12 games in 2007...- Dixon carried 287 times which equals 24 carries a game....and only got just over 1,000 yards....thats what...85 yards a game for Dixon? Are we really excited about 85 yards on 24 carries??? Really???

Get mad at me if you want...Butttttttttttttt....if you want me to get excited about a RB that gets 85 yards on 24 carries...well, 17 off....it aint gonna happen...

He is 17'ing average...and now that we lost 3 starters that include Mike Brown...get ready for a tougher year offensively than last year- which sucked by the way....

no one can step up or improve on the OL from last year. Dixon, providing he doesn't have a major injury, will have more yards and more ypc this year than he did last year.

My only argument has been that his production so far has been pretty average. He can do better, and I think he will do better.

"Mississippi State will suck in the future because of _____our offensive line stinks and our RB is average_____."

For a refresher, most Coach34 posts can be broken down into four categories:

1.) "Mississippi State sucks because of _____________________________."
2.) "Mississippi State will suck in the future because of ____________________________."
3.) "I wasn't really wrong when I mistakenly predicted Mississippi State would suck because _____________________________________________."
4.) "___(Non-MSU player or team)____ is awesome."

1. Do you really expect our offense to be better this year? We have had the same, ultraconservative playcalling for 4 straight years
2. Losing Mike Brown AND two others, do you really think the OL will be better? Seriously? 6 of our top 10 are Soph's and Freshmens
3, After losing Tony, are we really better at WR? You cant look at just his stats.. look at what teams did to make sure he didnt catch passes...other people got open because of that
4. We have Ducre and Elliot that also will have to get carries. Do you really think Dixon is going to get as many touches? There are only so many plays in a game and we will have to throw from time to time ya know.

offense and offense in general was statistically should shape our view of Dixon's stats? Dixon essentially carried the load for a crappy offense. With some more balance and less teams stacking the line he might actually do better. Unfortunately I don't think we'll see either this year. My hope is that our offense as a whole would be improved this year.

with Patdog. Dixon made clutch plays which is why I think a few of you are content to gloss over the numbers. He has potential but that doesn't erase the 85 yrds per game average- which isn't great. He has the heart, he's going give a lot more effort and that should contribute to a better season, hopefully.

Coach, I think you may be underselling the potential for improvement in our offense. But I honestly find myself siding with numbers more than clutch plays on this one. He has got to put up more yards, period.

That's the brass tax, OP4, Cowbell, and Shmuley.

You have to give him credit for putting up those average numbers with an anemic passing attack to compliment hamper the rushing game.

That said, I agree Dixon can be and needs to be a lot better. I see his biggest weakness being slow decision making, especially when approaching the line of scrimmage.

I say that is because players improve from year to year.

however, you are missing my point. Answer my questions:

1. Do you think after losing Tony, we are better at WR this year? I dont
2. Do you think that after losing Brown, we are better on the OL this year? I dont, while we may be ok, I dont see any way we will be better.

so, with that...if we arent any better at WR, and we arent better upfront...and we have the same ultraconservative offensive philosophy...I just dont see us being better on offense nor see Dixon having this blockbuster season...especially with him sharing more carries

You act as if we don't have any other OL after Brown was dismissed. You also don't give any room for improvement from our OL.

Here is a copy and paste of our OL roster. Notice how many RS Freshmen and Sophomores are listed.

70 J.C. Brignone OL 6-1 292 So. 1L Pass Christian, MS (St. Stanislaus HS)
58 Johnny Carpenter OL 6-2 293 Jr. 1L Citronelle, AL (Citronelle HS)
76 Phillip Freeman OL 6-6 297 Jr. TR Wesson, MS (Copiah-Lincoln [MS] CC)
78 Michael Gates OL 6-4 310 Sr. 3L Fairburn, GA (Sandy Creek HS)
68 Templeton Hardy OL 6-3 312 Fr. HS Como, MS (Lincoln HS)
75 Craig Jenkins OL 6-4 313 Jr. 2L Pearl, MS (Pearl HS)
Sam Latham OL 6-2 271 RFr. RS Cordova, TN (Briarcrest HS)
62 Addison Lawrence OL 6-4 282 RFr. RS Coldwater, MS (Magnolia Heights HS)
66 D.J. Looney OL 6-1 295 RFr. RS Birmingham, AL (Oak Mountain HS)
72 John McMillian OL 6-2 285 So. SQ Paragould, AR (Paragould HS)
74 Mark Melichar OL 6-5 294 So. 1L Birmingham, AL (Oak Mountain HS)
73 Dakota Merritt OL 6-5 302 RFr. RS Cantonment, FL (West Florida Tech)
55 Quinton Saulsberry OL 6-3 293 RFr. RS Coldwater, MS (Independence HS)
79 Derek Sherrod OL 6-5 303 So. 1L Columbus, MS (Caledonia HS)
67 Tobias Smith OL 6-3 328 Fr. HS Columbus, MS (Columbus HS)
63 Chris Spencer OL 6-3 306 Jr. SQ Meridian, MS (Meridian HS)
53 Anthony Strauder OL 6-3 292 Sr. 3L Natchez, MS (Natchez HS)

You have to admit that there might be some incoming talent that will help improve our line play even above the level we had last season. If that happens, I think you will see the 100+ yard games from Dixon that you require to rank him above average.

As for your WR statement, who the hell knows. We have never had a stable of WRs in my memory. We have had several excellent WRs in the past but I cannot see anyone on the current roster in their league. That doesn't mean that someone won't step up and surprise us.

All I remember you saying last season (over & over & over I might add) was how Dixon & Ducre' were the worst RB tandem in the SEC.

Of course, that claim had no basis in reality, which I suppose was the reason it went over so big on this board.

Second, I never read where you & coach34 claimed that Dixon had/was leaving 500 yds. on the table.

You, Constanza & coach34% were too busy posting offensive stats to be concerned with the nuance of Dixon's running ability.

Of course, the fact you claim you said it is enough for it to be believed here, I suppose.

Croom didn't "just back you up."

Croom was damning Dixon with faint praise.

You, on the other hand, are on some fantasy land crusade to prove a 1,000 yd. rusher sucks.

Good luck with that.

"You, on the other hand, are on some fantasy land crusade to prove a 1,000 yd. rusher sucks"

In looking up the top 100 rushers in the NCAA, only 6 players ha more carries than Dixon, yet they all had alot more yards...Dixon was an amazing 52nd in yards per game(82 yards...wowwwww), yet 7th in freaking number of carries...what exactly makes that good?
After looking at the top 100 rushers, its pretty obvious that its almost impossible to be a starting TB getting that many carries and NOT rush for 1,000 yards

He got the yards with everyone and their mother stacked on the line waiting for him to run. I am not saying he is one of the best in the country but he is definitely an above average RB.
