So you’re saying …. (Most) state fans wanted him back. could have him for cheap. was successful at Miss State. Filled up the stadium. developed a 2 star quarterback with one offer from ut-Martin into the highest paid quarterback in NFL history …….and……the administration is just not on the same page with the kind of success the fans loved?

I agree he’d quit on unlv tonight and come back right now. But perhaps therein lies the problem.

Given our situation, it is a 17’n chance worth taking.

We’ve hit on 1 out of 10 coaching hires. He was one of the 1’s. Bring him back, we suck donkey balls at everything right now.

Or, throw our whole NIL allotment at Greg Byrne and bring him back. Makes sense doesn’t it? When you think about it.

overpay the SOB in charge rather than waste it on portal transfers that suck. Let him evaluate them or put the people in place that will correctly do it.

Have a 17’n over paid head honcho in charge that knows what he is doing so that we can get players we need and not waste millions of dollars on scrubs.

I don't know what his options were. However I'm really surprised he took that job.

I assume. He feels Odom left it in good shape. He can capitalize and be off to a better job soon. No idea the thinking on that.

won’t hear me say anything bad about Byrne. He was “one of the 1’s too” imo. Leach too

He’d come back.

I want our university to be competent or at least look like it. We have a bunch of 17’ing losers as leaders
That’s because we are. Per a current athletic dept employee, Selmon and friends are in way over there head, and damn near more difficult to work with than Cohen. Don’t shoot me, I’m just the messenger.

A bunch of idiots. If I had enough money, it’d change quickly.

Im not an insider, but I could have told you that. These guys don’t have a 17ing clue what they’re doing. From Keenum to Selmon to Lebby. They’re in way over their heads. And they don’t even realize it.

This one of the reasons I don't pay for the pay board anymore. Those guys said dan was done with coaching last year when it was floated. doesn't look like it.

How do you assess that any program is left "in good shape " when you don't even know who is on your roster for the upcoming year?

They lead their conference in nil money and had a great year, I think it’s an easy road for him.

Such a posturing move from Dan but I like it. I think the NIL is suited to a college coach like him since he is lazy at recruiting. The past has shown us that & his etiquette is just off the old ways of recruiting. Now? NIL, just keep them paid and way less work because despite everything. It is well known & respected the man makes less talent just better.

Now the posturing, I expect him to make UNLV great & he gears up for a big name SEC school. Insane if he was on the market and we didn’t try. This whole second time go around isn’t going to apply to Dan I think because of the NIL, it is perfect for him. We shall see, at the end of the day like last time. He doesn’t want to be here but hey, come back, stay for 4 years do your magic so we can hook another great coach, let’s win now please, Mullen will do that.

Let him go ahead and start assembling some parts of unlv that could be competitive in the sec and bring those parts with him.

Bingo.

Any new football coach hired by Mississippi State will have to bring coaches and players with him to have any shot at moderate success.

UNLV could be a sleeping giant. Vegas has so much to offer from a city standpoint, great schools, great entertainment, and no state income tax (could play into NIL at some point), and they support Las Vegas. Tons of money, several billionaires that support UNLV, he could absolutely crush it there. Also the longer he is gone the more I realize the whole "he can't recruit" is just nonsense. He had NFL players all over the field. He just didn't recruit who the rankings told us he should.

Sadly, in the new NIL space, I think UNLV is an incredible job. Their collective is booming and growing with money coming in from casinos and donors that want to bring more money and hopefully some home playoff games to UNLV. I would expect them to be picked up by a major conference in the coming years. Mullen has probably found a solid home. 17'ing sucks but I have faith in Lebby and staff, for the time being. Year ones of a rebuild can be tough but Lebby is more than competent to turn this ship around. I just need to start seeing some bigger and better names come from the transfer portal. Cough...Arnold...cough

With an NFL team in town, Las Vegas will never care about UNLV. Just like they haven’t for the last 70 years.

Couldn’t agree more, UNLV is in a great position with nil and could become a powerhouse. I’m not sure I share your thoughts that Lebby is more than competent enough enough to turn the ship around.

Reading about Mullen, thought this was interesting:
His issues came from an inability, or lack of desire, to recruit at a level that Florida fans were happy with, as well as routinely flirting with NFL jobs. He neglected tasks that you simply can't overlook at a power conference program like Florida, while also looking to make a jump to the next level.

He had much more success at Mississippi State, where the expectation isn't to land multiple five-star talents each season; it's to be competitive in the SEC and run a functional team that can hang with the powers with three and four-star players.
