My cat of 14 years Amos, died last night after a continuous 7 hours seizure, it was a horrible thing to witness.

was being treated for infection with antibiotics 3rd round, and was given diazepam for post seizure, seizures

started about a month ago. Vets were not available last night, and i am sick my family and i had to witness

this. He was a good cat and deserved a better ending, but died in our living room where he spent 98% of his

life.

I always read the post of fellow Nitts who lose their pets and can feel the heartbreak through virtual space.

I cried all day like a big wimp. I hope my buddy didn't feel the pain, convulsions, paddling , howls, hyperventilating,

rapid heartbeat etc.

Can anyone with medical expertise, give me their opinion on his last hours, thank you in advance.

RIP AmosScreenshot 2023-07-31 at 9.33.04 PM.png

Corner, been through losing both dogs and cats more than I care to remember. So sorry. It's tough as hell to lose a pet. My cat recently was treated for over two months with a complicated UTI. Although she finally seems to have turned the corner, given her age I'm not taking much comfort at this point. Sorry I can't render an opinion re: your cat's last hours. At least the suffering is over.

So very sorry to hear. RIP Amos. I grew up a dog person, and sort of learned to disregard cats, like they didn't have feelings and didn't like humans. But, 13 years ago, we rescued two sisters from a hoarder, and I have learned how wrong I was. They are great friends, companions. I am so sorry for your loss and you are lucky to have found such a great friend.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the rainbow bridge together…

My sympathy goes out you and your family. May you find comfort in the memories. Amos had 14 years of love. He died a happy cat.
I have a 19 year old Tonkinese who is doing well for her age but I know time is running out.
Having had both dogs and cats in my 70 + years, I am reminded of this quote by Christopher Hitchens:
Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are god. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realize that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are gods.

Sorry to hear this. People that don't have pets have no clue how the loss of a feline or canine family member can be so difficult for those left behind. I've lost a number of dogs over the years, one time was a beloved doberman who had a heart attack right in front of my wife and I (was fairly traumatic to witness). Multiple times I've had to make the painful decision to euthanize. And it took a long time to get over each one.

As others have said, your cat was no doubt happy his family was there with him at the end.

Sorry to hear of your loss Corner; we lost Lucky 2 weeks ago. He was 15 and we spent many wonderful, memorable days together but their passing is never easy. We knew his time was coming as he was losing weight and stopped using his litter box but you're never ready for their leaving. Thankfully, the Lord had me home that day as I can't imagine him or any pet passing alone. He looked at me as we were snuggling, said goodbye one last time and crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Our fur babies are gifts from the Lord, to be cherished and treasured and are the definition of unconditional love

Watching a beloved pet slip away istough enough. The way your cat did was brutal. I'm sorry for your loss and hope only that he wasn't conscious during his final hours. Watching anyone seize is awful. To do it continuously for hours is awful. May his sleep be sweet and filled with feline dreams.

A month a a half ago we had to put down both our JRT’s on the same day. I miss them every day. It has hit me really hard since they were with me every day since the pandemic and working from home and then retirement. Pets enhance our lives tremendously and also leave a huge void when they are no longer with us.

RIP Amos and enjoy the next journey. 15 years is a nice long run.

regarding your pets final hours of stress, anxiety had probably as much to do with any symptoms as anything else. As we all know, there is nothing pleasant about being anxious. In the end, he is in a better place and you did all you could do. Take care.

Earlier this year we had to part ways with our cat of 18 years. 3 years ago it was her littermate that we had gotten at the same time in the summer of 2005. Watched 2005 season with them as playful kittens and can tell you that on many cool fall days since then they were within eyesight or reach (likely napping) as I watched games from my spot. It's an awful void that pets can leave behind but hopefully you can see through the tears that Amos had a great existence with you for the majority of his life. With regards to the end, it wasn't ideal, but his surroundings were familiar and he wasn't forced to battle off any external forces as he passed. They are absolutely family. Sorry for your loss

Had a cat very similar to yours. Had to put him down because it was suspected that he had advanced stage cancer. He was very good at hiding his illness till towards the end. It was the correct call to the have the cat put down because the vet did an autopsy and discovered that the cancer had spread throughout his body. Surgery would have put him through too much pain and they wouldn't have been able to remove all of the cancer. Wanted to have him die at home, but could tell he was suffering.

He was special to me for many reasons including that he knew I had a heart rhythm issue before I did. He'd always lay on my chest when I was sleeping as if to say I'd better watch you. You don't sound well. Not too long after the insistance of sleeping on my chest, I got a check up and eventually the treatment.

Anyway, Condolences. Pets are special.

Sorry for your loss.

Both my wife and I were not pet people. We got a lab about 5 years ago and that changed. She is now the center of the household. Going on vacation with us in a couple days to hike and swim. Pets ask for so little and give so much!

I say a prayer for Amos and your family. Did you name him after Adrian Amos?
14 years ago we had a cat named otis ,had to be put down, we had him 10 years a, cat was up for adoption named Amos, the caregiver decided to keep him, while looking for our present cat we noticed a rural accident in the distance only ones on the road to see it the man was life flighted out. Amos was a big cat in a cat cage, he prior owners called him fat *** and just didn't want him( could tell he was abused). Amos stuck in our head and gave us 14 years of love that is indescribable to put in words. Mr. Potter thank you for your prayers God Bless you.

Just focus on the well wishes for you, your family, and your good friend Amos who was thankful for the care and compassion you showed every day. That is all that is important.

Sorry to hear of your loss, went through a similar experience a few months ago, and it still hurts to think about at times. Can't speak to the part about the suffering, but from my personal experience I think these moments are ripe for self reflection and questioning what happened and how it could have been different. What's important is you were there for Amos even when it was difficult, that's often when it matters most.

Condolences for your loss. In a world where people can just plain suck, pets are so often preferable companions. God bless Amos as he enters eternity. I have no idea how his final hours felt, but rest assured his prior 14 years were a blessing to both him and you.

"There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who have never lived through its turnings or walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible. Only we know how small a price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy
we have been given.”
-Suzanne Clothier

Losing a beloved pet is terribly heartbreaking and difficult. My deepest condolences on the loss of your precious Amos. There is no doubt that he knew how much you loved him!
