Did you know that March Madness 3 week period is as lucrative as the entire SEC football/basketball/baseball seasons, all teams, all TV revenues, all bowl payouts?

March Madness funds quite a bit of smaller school athletic programs, so one would expect those to get cut eventually.

NCAA should have made athletes, long ago, sign some sort of disclosure agreement. But as it stands, they started allowing NIL in 2021, then 5 years before, then Pandora’s box.

Exactly. The courts forced the ncaa to allow. It's the courts.

The ncaa was right all along. What I mean is, kids should have been allowed to earn NIL. However the ncaa didn't allow it because they knew it would be abused by boosters.

in 202?, the ncaa did say, "ok now athletes can earn NIL but the rule is, you can't use it for recruiting HS kids." Then the courts said you can't limit nil. See the recent UT and UVA investigation that the courts ruled against (or in favor if you're UT)
For every 1 legit nil deal, there are 100s of full on flesh auctions at the hs level.

Why would football and basketball players agree to allow all the money they earn to go to women's volleyball or baseball? They're the ones earning it, it should go to them right?

With Title IX, it seems like the school response has to be to discontinue all athletic scholarships, and people can use NIL to pay for school if they make enough.

I just finished a sports economics course and got into some of this fairly deep. There’s an interesting history with the NCAA and broadcast rights. They used to have those rights for sports generally (e.g., all college football games). Schools faced rising costs from Title IX and other things, so they fought back and got the rights. This is a big reason why college football started being broadcast more widely. You started having several sellers (conferences) instead of a single seller (NCAA). NCAA retained March Madness rights, though, so that’s where most of their money comes from. Taking that away would destroy the NCAA

Was one of the stipulations with the recent multi-billion $ settlement not that all these reparations could only go back so far (like 10 years)? Maybe it's that the P5 schools and NCAA agreed to spend a few billion on former athletes with a limit of 10 years, but there's nothing preventing lawsuits from individuals prior to this period.

So in essence, we've taken one of the groups of people more notorious than any other for squandering any income or education that they were able to generate from playing sports, and the door has been opened to sue, sue, sue any time that they start running low on funds. Great... I do wonder when colleges are going to begin to push back by stating that they paved the way for a good life for these kids by providing them with a free education, yet they did nothing with that. Any chance that holds up in court?

It’s not sustainable in its current form. Unfortunately by the time they figure all this out it will probably be too late to fix it. Theyre being reactive and not proactive right now.
