Two years ago when the NCAA waived the transfer sit out rule to allow a player to make ONE transfer without sitting out, it was called a temporary waiver. The history seems to be connected to the COVID world and players who were stuck on teams who were not playing or limited seasons. So this was to help players move to a program who may be playing. As we get to normal seasons now, would we expect the NCAA to drop the waiver and go back to the sit out a season rule? Frankly, if you did not have the sit out waiver, I am not sure the transfer portal would nearly as active. The portal is nothing but a simple website with a database - not rocket science. The real engine is the waiver to sit out a year.
I am surprised at the number of announcers on ESPN who think that the transfer right is unlimited - i.e. you can transfer as much as you want without sitting. Even Dabo made the comment we should have a rule you can only transfer once and then have to sit out. That IS the rule.
