The NCAA is the 1950’s house and college athletics is that lot on Eastover Drive that’s worth too much to let go.

Bulldoze it. Wipe it clean. Rebuild.

The new NCAA must separate itself completely from the schools themselves. The new NCAA will be made up of de facto representative organizations such as the Bulldog Club, M Club, etc. Those members will have voting rights to pass bylaws to govern operations.

The new NCAA will not meddle or concern itself with education and eligibility at all. Those are governed strictly by the universities and they operate under their own authority as with all students.

As far as the new NCAA is concerned:

Didn’t pass enough hours to stay on degree track?.. don’t care.

Buckshot gpa before the bowl game?… don’t care.

Not even enrolled in school?.. Don’t care.

Athletic department employees, coaches and all, are NOT university employees. Instead they and the players are under contract with the Bulldog Club.

College athletics… particularly college football.. becomes a privately owned sports league similar to the NFL.

To save college athletics you’ve got to get the courts out. To get the courts out you’ve got to remove the education component. It must be privatized.

My dad said this 15 years ago. He said we are torturing these poor kids making them maintain a GPA when the only reason they are on campus is to play football. Joe Lee Dunn told me MSU was the only school he coached where the players were required to go to class.

Evidently, we are years behind in the pro football thinking at State. We follow the rules because if Alabama cheats we go on probation. It is a new day in college football where you need to line up corporate sponsors and buy the best players you can get.

De-coupling from the university = minor league NFL. Minor league NFL has yet to work but maybe it will if they try it just once more.

While I know that the ideal of the amateur athlete has been a fiction for some time, recent changes are making it much harder to pretend. I’m not interested in minor league NFL.

It’s never been attempted with built in fan bases like college athletics.

But in any case.. it ain’t gonna survive in its current state.

It’s what we’ve got right now. Only there’s no draft, no salary caps and no contracts.

So many people in denial about what’s actually going on…
