WOW! Dude won the starting job, beats Clem and Miami, and decides he's going to redshirt b/c "he doesn't like the way he's being used". I think we all know the real reason....he chasing portal $$.
We'll see. Hard to imagine winning the job outright, beating 2 teams you had no business beating, then deciding to mail it in. Only one real plausible reason there.FWIW, his dad said he is not leaving the program.
He's Tyler from Spartanburg. We'll see. Hard to imagine winning the job outright, beating 2 teams you had no business beating, then deciding to mail it in. Only one real plausible reason there.
I don't generally have a problem with the portal. Without it, we don't have Ratt/Juice. We haven't had a defection near the magnitude of landing those two guys.I don't know your position on it, but I know some who are pro-portal who bemoan stuff like this. Can't have it both ways. If you're pro-portal, you have to embrace ALL of it.
Wow! Thanks for the info.Sadly his parents are an absolute nightmare and run every aspect of this kids life. This was not a coaches decision, but orchestrated by his parents. His dad is the only one who has spoken to media outlets regarding the matter and while he may have said MJ isn’t leaving the program (he probably means this year so he can continue to cash in on MJ’s NIL money while he remains redshirted and with the program), he also hasn’t said MJ will be returning next season. Meanwhile his mom and aunt have been all over social media saying that he’s transferring and bashing anybody who has been slightly critical of MJ’s performance. MJ’s parents have been notoriously difficult people long before this. Case in point, MJ is no stranger to transferring as he did it twice in HIGH SCHOOL. Went from being one of the highest ranked QB’s in the country only to see his stock drop quite a bit before the end of his senior year. He held offers from basically every top P5 program in the country, yet it’s widely known that Georgia, Tennessee, and Nebraska all reached a point in the recruiting process where they simply backed off because they didn’t want to have to deal with his toxic father. Multiple schools actually rescinded scholarship offers along the way. Ultimately, NC State knew bringing this kid on board was going to be a gamble and he was probably always at risk of leaving. State did everything they could to appease MJ and his family NIL wise over the summer after bringing in Brennan Armstrong. However, even with MJ getting the nod as the starter earlier in the season, his production has been far from impressive and statistically he’s been worse than Armstrong (he just has wins against Clemson and Miami) to help distract from his stats. Apparently he was practicing with the scout team today. It’s just sad that this kid is 20 years old and seems afraid to stand up to his own family or have any thoughts or opinions of his own. Years from now MJ Morris will be another sad story of a kid who had an unbelievable amount of potential and it was all wasted thanks to greedy parents who are all about themselves and what they can get now ($$$) and are too busy trying to tell coaches how they should be using their son or making excuses for his average play instead of allowing MJ to buy into a program and trust the coaching staff will develop him. Wouldn’t be shocked to see him transfer to Vandy. Following the Miami game he was tweeting to a member of the coaching staff (surprise surprise - his parents have ties to) and his mom was singing his praises in the replies. Wish MJ nothing but the best no matter what he decides to do, but if he transfers…well…I’ll say extra prayers for that teams coaching staff!
I’m sure they weren’t “using him right”…..whole situation sound familiar, no??Is he that good to be seeking NIL deals? He completed 60.5% of his passes last year and 55.8% this year.
That's one thing that makes a college coach's job almost unbearable. Having to bow down to these prima donna privileged in their own minds teens. Not enough *** kissing from coaches.
Fortunately, I don't embrace it. Keeps me from having to defend crap like this.I don't know your position on it, but I know some who are pro-portal who bemoan stuff like this. Can't have it both ways. If you're pro-portal, you have to embrace ALL of it.
I'd tell him he didn't have to bother coming to practice or meetings anymore and he could go ahead and clean out his locker. Coaches have to reinforce the fact that the program is bigger than any one player, no matter how good that player might be. The fact MJ isn't anything special makes it easy to tell him to hit the road.
Yep. Same thing that happened with McLeod.I'd tell him he didn't have to bother coming to practice or meetings anymore and he could go ahead and clean out his locker. The fact MJ isn't anything special makes it easy to tell him to hit the road.
This is all about securing another year of NIL income. He's not going pro, which means he could play out this season and then have two years of earnings left. Or, he could redshirt, and then have three years worth of earnings left. It's a simple business decision.
Now NC State can make their own business decision and cut bait, or pay the man. It's a new era - no reason to yell at clouds. Get with it, or fall behind.
That's a good point. I had wondered what he had done to warrant any interest. But they could be still trying to remind people that he's still a 4* talent.Trust me, MJ is making plenty of NIL money and drives a very nice new truck that went along with that package! Outside of Payton Wilson (who is earning the most NIL money) I believe MJ is either 2nd or 3rd on the team (KC may be ahead of him) with regards to NIL money. When Armstrong was brought in over the summer, MJ’s parents essentially told the staff that if he didn’t make more $$$ then he’d transfer. NC State and their two NIL collectives stepped up to the plate and did what they had to in order to shut his parents up. Given his performance on the field this year, I think his parents made the decision for him that he’d quit and redshirt with 4 games left to limit the amount of game film potential new suitors would have to judge him by…they have to keep other schools thinking of as that once 4 star recruit….not the guy who, in 4 games, has thrown for 719 yards, has 7 TD’s but also 5 INT’s, and has a QBR of 31.2. For a kid who once held offers from so many big time P5 schools, it’s going to be sad to watch him end up somewhere like a Vandy or other struggling D1 program…but that’s what will likely happen because all his parents care about is that everyone worship the ground the kid walks on and where he will be THE top guy on campus. I feel bad for MJ because this poor kid, well 20 year old adult, isn’t allowed to think or speak for himself and has an entourage of family members who all seem to be after what’s in it for them…not him.
Yep. Without it we wouldn't have went 8-4 last year with two of the best Ws in our history. The portal is part of the current landscape, so I see no benefit in either deriding or promoting it's existence.
It is, what it is.

Guys that don't play don't get NIL. Sure, he got some to come. But seems to me this stunt will ensure that they hit the portal AGAIN for a QB to play over him and whatever deals he had in place will dry up and not get renewed (assuming their annual deals). He damn sure ain't getting an new deals after this. But that’s the whole point. He’s making a lot of NIL money right now. So he can make that for two more years if he finishes out the season, or he can make that for three more years if he redshirts.
Seems like he’s being very honest with himself and understands he’s probably not going to make money playing football in the NFL. Therefore he should try and make as much money playing football in college.
If he were just a moody WR or RB I would totally agree with you. But QB is the only position you have to have. And teams will always go "all in" on any QB that has proven he can win games in a Power 5 conference.Guys that don't play don't get NIL. Sure, he got some to come. Cogent explanation.I don’t disagree with you. Unfortunately,
I don’t think he’s “being honest with himself” nor do those close to the situation feel MJ necessarily wanted to make the decision. Unfortunately for this young man, his parents are the ones who call the shots for him and I think the kid is terrified to speak up and question or go against what they tell him he’s going to do. Additionally, if ANYONE remotely suggests or alludes to MJ not being the best there is or points out aspects of his game where he can improve, his mother and aunt immediately feel the need to jump on social media and blame his shortcomings on anyone and everyone but MJ. It’s very odd and bizarre behavior from a parent, to not only go off on sports writers (who aren’t speaking negatively about him but rather are just suggesting areas where he can improve) but feel the need to defend him at every turn when this was a fan base that was literally chanting this kids name in support of him. Best case scenario for MJ is that he takes what NIL money will still be due to him for the remainder of the season and still have the possibility to earn 3 more years of NIL money and is smart enough to put that money in a savings account that his parents can’t access. Sadly, given the entourage that is his family and their behavior before as well as leading up to all of this…let’s just say they likely see MJ’s earnings as THE FAMILY’S MONEY, not solely MJ’s money. Lastly, for what it’s worth, while none of us know the specifics of the NIL contracts/agreements he currently has in place, I can confirm that he has already been removed from the Savage Wolves NIL athletes page which shows all athletes who currently have NIL deals with them…and yes…they are the football specific collective for NC State and the ones with the big $$$ going to players. Read into that what you want, but depending on the terms of that agreement it’s possible his potential earnings for the remainder of the season (at least) have already taken a big hit following his announcement earlier this week…
I like it if the university can also shut a player down mid season that ain’t productive and say you ain’t on the team no more your loser!I don't know your position on it, but I know some who are pro-portal who bemoan stuff like this. Doren could have told him to kick rocks like Beamer did with McLeod.I like it if the university can also shut a player down mid season that ain’t productive and say you ain’t on the team no more your loser!
I give Shane credit for that.Doren could have told him to kick rocks like Beamer did with McLeod.
