  • Notre Dame defensive end Isaiah Foskey, the school's career leader in sacks, announced Thursday on social media that he will declare for the 2023 NFL draft and not play for the Irish in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl against South Carolina.

Foskey, a junior, is rated by ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. as the No. 5 draft-eligible outside linebacker prospect. ESPN's Todd McShay rates Foskey as the No. 5 defensive end prospect, and Scouts Inc. lists Foskey as the No. 32 overall prospect in the draft.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Foskey broke Justin Tuck's career sacks record Nov. 19 at Boston College and will finish his Notre Dame career with 26.5 sacks. He recorded 122 career tackles, 31.5 for loss, with seven forced fumbles.

Well, for sure, the fans of whichever team loses will be saying "yeah, but we were without ____________."

Bowl games should not count against the 4 games you can play without losing your redshirt.

Yes, but that will last a few weeks.

For the most part, when looking back on years past records, that will all be forgotten.

For example, do we even know or care who opted out for NC last year?

Why even have these games? I understand the payouts, but as a fan I don't want to watch our 3rd stringers vs ND's 3rd stringers. This opt out thing may be great for the players, but it sucks for the fans. Whether we win or lose it won't matter, we'll not have played Notre Dame. This is JV on JV. Who cares? Expanded playoff, if that doesn't work college football will be dead and it's on life support now.

Well, @Lurker123 makes a good point above. A few months or years from now, all that will show is our final record and that we played ND in a bowl game. Nobody will remember who opted out. Any opportunity to play a program with the exposure that ND brings is a great opportunity.

Sucks for some fans like yourself. My family enjoys and I'm guessing there will be 70k+ at the game enjoying. Until people stop going and watching on TV, the games will continue.

Maybe you can boycot by not watching?

Baby steps... hopefully we will build on this and earn more significant post season appearances.

In the scenario mentioned by OP, nice weather may require a round of golf vs watching.
I agree with him, when a certain amount of starters don't play the game loses importance to me.
With that said, after my round of golf, I'll be happy if we won 😁 and if I make a few birdies 🤣.

The extra practices we get for bowl game prep alone are worth playing the games. I’m Total agreement that the bowls shouldn’t count against the redshirt.
