Needs from transfer portal seem to exceed our openings

there have been only a few players indicating they are going to NFL draft even though they could come back. the roster is somewhat skewed to players with 2 or more years left to play if they want to stay. We have more players in the 2024 class than are out of eligibility. Last report showed only 3 leaving PSU to transfer.

It does not look like there are that many openings to bring in transfers, and that assumes we don't grow the 2024 class from where it is now.

the staff is recruiting WRs and OL specifically, but how many actual slots are available. some teams like Indiana have massive transfer outs, so can be aggressive.

All depends on how many spots you want to open. OSU ran out a bunch of players.
At least some of that seemed unintentionally. Like when you start talking to portal QBs and your starting QB wants assurance that he is the guy, isn't given it, and hits the portal himself. I doubt that they wanted returning starter Fleming to depart either even if he was expected to be the #3 guy again. Their RB depth was hit hard with guys who have big potential and were a part of their plans.

The portal is an interesting thing in that you can go out and improve positions quickly but it also sends a message to your current players about your commitment to them.

I agree but it is 2023. There is no commitment to anyone in anything at this point. Mostly lip service. College sports are no different than the working world.

We should be celebrating Franklin for creating a culture where portal transfers and opt-outs are minimal.
I tend to go back and forth on this. Although OSU's amount of transfers is crazy it shows the urgency and priority to beat Michigan and win a national championship. They lost one game and are shaking things up.

I also think it shows that they know coming from OSU, it gives them an advantage in the portal. Sort of like Bama to the NFL. You taking a chance on a RB from OSU or Vanderbilt?

If the kid from Vandy picked up 1,000 yards and the kid from OSU is third team. I'm taking the Vandy kid.

Outside of Fleming and McCord, all OSU has done is free up scholarship space.

I doubt Fleming was encouraged to return.
