After seeing Negron v Humphreys snd Teemer ( told you he d get after another kid from LI ! . Teemer knows what I m saying and I like him. ) I ll admit being from NY I like this kid s future. Late bloomer imo. Tough , fearless w some real wrestling skill and talent . High high ceiling! His journney , Comm Coll , Wolfpack RTC and then says I m going to go to Penn State and win it all or be the best I can trying. Imo that takes guts. No fear here! Wants the competition .Kinda guy we want .

However ,he got here - he s passionate about wrestling , dedicated fully and he s matured. Good for him. He s teachable and ard the right people. . Have asked ard LI wrestling circles and ppl say nothing but the above and watch out! No doubt a teachable kid that wants to learn.

So apologies to ppl who want to talk Midlands , Covid and deny ducking is a real thing……..
If you were Cael , Casey , Jimmy and Cody , what in terms of wrestling would you be focusing on w this kid? Knowledgeable board here, I m looking fwd to your thoughts . One last thing ? Is he the guy going fwd? All input is welcome .
Thanks. Merry Christmas . CB

Ps oh and ppl are selling Drew way short imo. I saw Courtney Mon and Tuesday. I ll take Drew any day. Perfect fit for the program. 2X AA w room to get even better! Sit back, enjoy and watch.

LI Lion, your positivity is going to ruin this board 😉. I thought the purpose of this board is to gripe about how pathetic it is that we don’t have an AA at every weight?

Do you, like me, remember the lean times when we’d win national titles with, dare I say it, 4 or 5 AAs? Perhaps during this holiday season I will be grateful for the past 10 years as a PSU wrestling fan, and then on January 1st, I’ll start lamenting the fact that we can’t score at 25 and that Jason Nolf and Cenzo chose to graduate rather than figuring how to get on the Iowa 7-year plan.

LI Lion, I’m holding you personally accountable for Negron’s success. How dare you support him BEFORE he’s had any success - that’s blasphemy. You better get on the horn with Uncle Tony and make sure young Tony doesn’t take Xmas Day off.

All sarcasm aside (laying it on thick today), thank you for bringing some much-needed positivity and optimism to the board. You’re probably the only Penn State wrestling fan who would credit Joe Lee for trying to throw his opponent from the bottom position. Heck, he tried, right? Merry Xmas to all and to all a good night!

I remember the lean times, but still good times, when wife and I could drive to SC, get a room, walk to the girl's vball match, buy a ticket, come back the next day and buy a ticket for the wrestling match. I was one of the original members of the Wrestling Club, then my job took me on the road too much, and I let my membership drop. I still went to the tourneys and nationals but to get back where I was I would have to take out a 2nd mortgage. Just kidding. Good to see sold out crowds. I am a PS grad and wife a Clarion grad. Should have seen me when Wade Schalles wrestled the late great Clyde Frantz for the 1st time. I told my wife I wouldn't say a word and I didn't while she was screaming. She is now converted to PS though. Lots of good wrestling memories.

I like Tony a lot from what I have seen. I agree with your comments LI Lion Bvdstf
He seems aggressive and fearless .After watching Joe Lee against Cornell, Barraclough early on and Tony against Teemer and Humphries, I think Tony is the guy at 157 going forward. Jeff Byers made a similar comment during his broadcast as well. I think Tony is good on his feet and can get to the legs., but needs to finish better. Much like Nick Lee in his freshman year. Now nobody finishes better than Nick. Love his ankle pick. He has good length and technique to make that work. Love that he isn't afraid to shoot and has a desire to win. Not sure how he is on top since we have a small sample size his small, but I suspect they are working on that. He tried the cradle in the one match which was encouraging but just had a hard time executing it. That may be a good move for him with his length and long arms . He reminded me of Shak who loved the cradle and had good length for his weight too . I think he just needs more experience in matches. We have not seen a lot of him on the bottom, but I thought he did get out from Teemer fairly well. Most young guys seem to struggle on the bottom, so I suspect they are working on that position with him like they do with all the younger guys. Love his potential and could be a real surprise this year. At least he brings some glimmer of hope at 157.

I might not qualify as one of the knowledgeable ones but I do have an opinion.

Experience, experience, experience. If he is going to be our starter going forward then put him in the line-up to stay. So far he has shown that he can hang tough with top-10 wrestlers. Unfortunately, he is 0-3.

Let's see what he can do against kids ranked at #15+. Those are the matches he will have to win to qualify and possibly score points at NCAAs.

If the coaches are still not certain who will be our guy then I'd like to see Tony along with J Lee and Bearclaw at the Scuffle..

We don t have an AA at every weight ? There goes the NC ! Lol . All the negative Nellies , How d the ASU match go? I missed it . Curious if my preview in that thread was accurate?
Sonny you are a 126 pound legend! Nico , Carl Destefanis ( The pride of Locust Valley , NY) !!!!!! territory ! Appreciate your opinions . Don t always agree but respect. U r right ! Joe almost had him! Sooo close ! Go Joe! 😂. Merry Christmas to all! CB

Ps Yes apologies for not thinking the sky is always falling! Let s enjoy this ride! 3 words: Believe in Cael. We have a great team and great people . The latter is more important. Listen to Aaron , CStar , Nick, RBY, Beau , Kerk , Max - it goes on and on , be interviewed . These are college kids who understand life more than many uhhh older ppl.
! Yes I apologize for all the optimism and perspective . Lol
And as much as I bust on Iowa , I like the Brands . The reason many hate them is they want to win as much as us. Ok their style might not be our taste but who cares. Itvs a sport. (Heard Tom interviewed once and was impressed by his love of this country. )
Finally , any one not familiar w Brad Penrith ‘s story , (Windsor , NY!!!! and Iowa legend) look it up. Amazing . Life transcends sport. Wishing Brad all the best! Hope he s continiuing to get all the happiness in life he deserves! Inspirational ! A HS teammate of mine lost 3-2 or 4-2 in the NYS final to Brad . I thought my guy could not be beat that yr. I asked him what happened? He said Penrith tough and a freak athlete. Vice grip. Also said he had great humility even bk then w all he was going through! Sorry for the upbeat story !

Let s get back to grammar , how bad it is to say we respect PSU s wrestlers and covid. Merry Christmas and God Bless America! CBV

Great comments. Yes a quick Shak another LI guy! Funny both he and Shak were lil guys in HS and wrestle that way! Great length. Get s out from bottom. Top game key. W his leverage can tilt ppl! Max , Zain show him. Yes raw but We got a story developing here! Go Tony! N Babylon strong! ( Anthony Soboteker - Binghamton 133 and Tony may have been teammates ? Sobotoker is good. Went the comm college route as well at Nassau CC on Long Island. ) Tony will be a name everyone knows come March. That s what I think.

Nice points!
I think he ll do real well!!!! vs the 16 ranked range guys esp w coaching. But yes key is how quick he can get where he needs to be. Yes 0-3 but he s wrestling to win. Aggressor in all his matches ! Not trying to keep it close! He s fearless . I ve been told great kid and they don t come any tougher or driven . Got that NY attitude . It s who he is.

LI Lion, you do know I’m not the real Sonny, right? 😀. My claim to fame is that I helped Sonny in our management classes together, and I think he cheated off me on an exam or two. Barely spoke English, I have no idea how he graduated, but he was the quickest I’ve ever seen - quicker than RBY.

Although this is a discussion board where any and all opinions are welcome and encouraged, as outlandish as some might be (e.g. picking BB over Yianni), my frustration often stems from fans thinking they know more or better than Cael, who someday will pass Gable as the greatest coach of all time. Who are we to question his (and his staff’s) judgment? Sure, it’s fine to debate, but I sure as hell trust his judgment more than mine or any one of you! Take care!

In 1995 a group of us decided to begin an annual ‘guy thing’ and our first destination was the Big 10 championship held at Indiana. I forget who won the thing but Sunny Abe showed up and his performance reignited a passion in me. That group of ours has gone to many of the Big 10 championships and a few NCAAs. The group has ranged from three guys to 14. Some years we don’t make it at all. This year there’s four of us renting a cabin in central PA to watch the NCAAs. We lament the times we’d attend big 10’s and there weren’t that many in the stands for first and second rounds and we could sit pretty much where we wanted to. Not so anymore, which, if we’re ‘trying to grow the sport’ it’s a good thing but I miss the days of great seats. Sunny Abe rekindled the love affair with wrestling for me anyway.

I've wrestled and officiated a LOT of matches during my life. Negron has flashed some potential. Needs to learn how to finish his shots. The comparison to Nick in earlier post about finishing is a good one. On the flip side, I don't see Nick's fire. Nick is one intense dude and that drives him during a match and in the practice room to get better. I don't see that same demeanor in Negron.
I'm not saying he needs Nick's demeanor to be good - but he certainly needs to learn how to finish shots and if he is as coachable as you believe he is, then he will be better by the end of the season.

Great point. Wrestled a bit myself. Tony took some time to find himself . I believe that demeanor is obtainable for him ( Noyt saying he s Nick!) . He s full of emotion needs to turn that energy into intensity . I ll reword that , he s intense. Complete focus and efficient use of his energy is needed. He can and will imo. But yes Nick is one of a kind, amazing wrestler! Thanks. CB.

And Tony gets his first win at !57. and it was a major. Love his aggressiveness. In fact its our first win at 157 this year. Tony is getting better, which is good since he may be our starter going forward. (Berge rumored to go 165)

As mentioned 165 is freaking loaded this year. Love to see Berge go 157. Much better chance to win or AA. We need points big time. Maybe he will cut down for Big Tens and Nationals 🙏. Guess we’ll see how things play out.
