Here's a comparison of where we stand in the NET today, after the non-conference has ended, vs where we were after the Drake game last year on Dec. 21. It's not a perfect comparison because last year we still had the very valuable TCU game in the Big 12/SEC challenge but that wasn't until late January. Because of that game, we also played a conference game on Dec. 28. Regardless, here is what it looks like today vs Dec 21 2022. I also added our Selection Sunday profile.

Some good, some bad I guess.
  • We are seven spots lower this year which is pretty easily explained by being undefeated last year and having two losses this year. But the Southern loss hasn't ruined our season as so many were quick to proclaim.
  • Last year we picked up a road win at Minnesota. This year we took the L at Georgia Tech.
  • Last year we were 2-1 in Quads 1/2 with wins over Marquette and Utah and the loss to Drake. This year we are 4-1, so that's better, but we don't have a win like that Marquette win this year. In fact, we haven't even played a Q1 game. Remains to be seen how many of those five Q2 games will stay Q2.
  • We played one less game in Q3/Q4 this year so that is good, but the screwup against Southern sticks out like a sore thumb.

The opponents and schedule part is confusing to me. Please, someone explain it to me.
  • In the opponent ranks, our overall schedule seems to be much stronger this year. The NET for our average opponent is 159 vs 211 last year. Last year that ranked 282 on Dec 21, today it ranks 101.
  • The NET SOS and the non Conf SOS are essentially the same as last year. Does that mean the conference schedule is expected to be significantly better this year than last year? Is that why the opponent rank is 101 this year vs 282 last year? Last year we ended up at 38 in SOS so I would expect a similar leap this year. But not in the non-conference schedule. It seems destined to be really bad. I can't make sense of all of those.

We played a much better non conference schedule this year. We did have a massive win over Marquette last year, but we had no idea how good they would be when we played them. We played several Power 5 teams and very few potential quad 4 games (although we lost one of them). Pretty smart scheduling on our part. Unless we completely collapse in SEC play, we should be comfortably in the tournament.

NET is just mind boggling. OM is 13-0 with a win over Memphis and is 59.

It’s because they played a soft schedule and played almost all their games at home. Other than Memphis, which was also at home, they have no good wins. Also, LSU went 11-1 in non conference last season and then went 2-16 in SEC play.

The Southern loss hasn’t even begun to wreak its fullest devastation on our resume. They are only Top 200 in the NET by virtue of their win over us. They’d be in the 230 ~ 250 range if they had lost to us. And as they get into SWAC play and start dropping games to other awful teams, they are going to start regressing towards that crappy mean, and drag our ranking down with them.

I know you are right but I’m in denial about it
