The passage of these were a formality but include, among other things:

--Takedowns will now be worth three points

--Three-point nearfalls are in

--The first medical forfeit of a tournament will be a loss unless the wrestler medical defaults out of his previous match.

--Officials can let action continue after penalizing an illegal hold and not require a stoppage after imminent scoring finishes when the safety of wrestlers is not in danger.

--The video review rule is now as follows per a NCAA news release:

“The rule change provides the referee with the authority to confirm or overturn all calls or missed calls during a video review challenged sequence,” the statement said. “For coach’s challenges, the sequence is described as the time from the alleged error until the match is, or should have been, stopped by the referee.”

So is the 3 point near fall in addition to the 2 and 4 point near fall?

Iowa should be worried. Not many offensive wrestlers on that squad now that Spencer is gone. This change makes it an even more uphill battle for them to win matches.

It's going to be fun watching how teams/individuals adjust to this change. Seems as though this will lead to more aggressive matches.

Just an FYI, your article says "Takedowns will not be worth three points instead of two." I initially thought it hadn't passed until I saw the tweet below it.

Willies stalling comments...........

I would be fine if either riding time only accrued after a TD or they called stalling on the top ride when there is zero effort to turn or get into a position to turn.

In Starocci's NCAA semi's , he was riding to get into position to turn......and ran out of time.

Ride to Turn

While I like the OOB rules we have, clearly there are times when guys are keeping their toe in and nothing is really going on outside the circle other than holding on. Carter does this too for a few seconds. I could see a 5 count, then back to the center.

Tom, do you (or anyone else) have insight into whether the “ankle grasp” rule includes bow and arrows? In my mind the ankle has to be fully “grasped” for the move to be successful. Maybe it will be an exception?

  • The first medical forfeit of a tournament will count as a loss on the wrestler's record. An exception will be if the medical forfeit occurs immediately after an injury default in a tournament.
hopefully they also included the condition where someone wins by injury disqualification. It is very rare to see this in college but I do remember seeing it once last year (think It was a Pitt dual).

I don't. I'll try to remember to check with a college wrestling ref, but they probably won't be trained on the new rules for some time.

I think the guy makes a lot of good points. I don't care for the rule changes. And I think the rational of drawing more to the sport is kind of silly. If you change the rules and the game, is it really the same sport? I think for true fans of the sport, this takes a little away from it. At least it does for me.

I've been wrestling with this all offseaon and have decided that I won't judge it until I see it in action a few times but it is certainly going to be different, no doubt about that.

A well earned egroanji to you sir!

I don't like the three point takedown. The only changes that I would like to see for Folk is to eliminate the riding time point and clarify what stalling is.

I think the present scoring system is just fine. Knowing that if you can't get off the bottom your opponent is rewarded adds additional incentive to get out. I agree about stalling and will add this, enforce it once you define it.

agree. i think riding is an art. that's why i like folk. great ones have to be proficient in all three phases. if stalling rules were actually enforced, you don't need all this other crap. tbs, i can live with 3 point td.

I would LOVE a clarification on what stalling is and have it called with some degree of consistency
