There are others that know more details than me, but from what little I've heard, Capturion's bulk of experience comes at schools like USM, Rice, and Tulane, while Daktronics has put boards in multiple MLB and NFL stadiums, while also doing Texas's Godzillatron, Auburn's formerly largest HD board in the SEC, and I believe Nebraska's boards as well.
Again, I know very little about HD technology or the two companies, but a lot of our fans pitched a fit when they found out that Capturion was likely going to be the company to construct our board and not Daktronics. Then, the project was re-bid and Daktronics won the re-bid.
My guess is that to the untrained eye, their boards don't look any different. However, the only thing I could see being an issue is that if you don't go with the industry leader, you could end up SOL when it comes to maintenance and repair contracts. I feel pretty confident Daktronics is going to remain in the HD video board business for the forseeable future based on the contracts they already have. Capturion, however, does not quite have the same amount of foothold.
I think SoxFan on the other site made the comparison to us choosing a non-industry leader (FieldTurf) for our artificial grass surface, rather than going with the industry leader (AstroPlay). FieldTurf is no longer in business, so we're stuck with fake grass that's fading and unattractive, when we could've had AstroPlay for just a little bit more, and they'd still be around to help take care of the field.
