First of all, I was impressed with Manny Diaz and I would be kind of disappointed if we don't get him, depending on who we get, of course. Very creative, good mix of zone blitzing, I just liked what I saw. I was really impressed that after getting down 14 to a team that had more playmakers than they did on defense and quite frankly was more talented, he was able to somehow get his defense in a position to slow USM down, and eventually took over. Stopping Damion Fletcher is not easy, but they did it.

I was also impressed with Tony Franklin's offense. Now, I'm not saying that we should scrap Mullen's by any means at all, but it's pretty obvious to me that there was something not right at Auburn, and it wasn't Franklin. I think it would be cool if we ran that offense at some point. It's not too much different from what we do now, but I really liked that he was able to run his offense with both a mobile and a pro style QB seamlessly.

Now, as far as USM, are people still worried about playing them? Remember we beat MTSU 24-9 and it wasn't really that close on the ROAD. I'm not saying that we will beat USM by 56 by any means, but there is no reason to be scared of them. These are not the Bobby Collins era Golden Eagles. Sorry to go Rick Cleveland on all of ya'll.

Lastly, I have to advocate that Mike Slive get some sort of a tie in with the NOLA bowl for the 10 or 11 place SEC team. Ya'll knew that was coming, didn't ya'll?

I am glad are playing southern again. Awful is all I can say. Diaz, I don't think what was going on tonight was spectacular. Solid yes, great no. Not a plethora of athletes on either side USM had a size advantage that the offense that the run didn't allow them to use.

MTSU only three loses are Clemson, Troy, and us. Diaz was interviewed leading up to this game and he mentioned that USM was more athletic than Clemson but similar to Troy...he didn't even mention us. Was this on purpose not to draw attention to his interest..not likely but I find it odd.

According to this article, MTSU leads the nation in tackle for loss, caused 31 turnovers, 4th nationally in sacks, and held us to 178 yards rushing. Diaz runs an attacking defense. He seems to be a perfect fit for the style of defense that Mullen wants. Unless Georgia or Flordia is making a huge push for Diaz, he better end up in Starkville.

If he is indeed a candidate, being mum is probably the best way to go.

Although, when you have a midget running your offense, it's hard to compare to anyone- even to Troy.

for sure. Hard to believe they give up points like they do after all those years of having pretty gritty defenses.

He built the program.

The justification the administration gave fans - and it was a very split base when they canned him - was that Larry would take them to the next level quickly, specifically that being CUSA titles.

When I lived there the bandied about dream was for USM to leave CUSA and go to the Big East.

You know. So they could win BCS games.

at the same time Bower wasn't going anywhere either. If he was such a great coach he would have a job right now.

Granted, so far it looks like he is better than Fedora at doing more with less but this isn't saying much.

Just for the record:

Bobby Collins: 48-30-2 - .613
Jim Carmody: 37-29 - .561
Curly Hallman: 22-11 - .667
Jeff Bower: 119-83-1 - .589
Larry Fedora: 14-12 - .538

How did Bower build the program when he had a worse record than 2 of the 3 coaches that preceded him?

I couldn't believe that was a USM defense, against an offense that got spanked by Troy and State defenses. And I say this as someone who had USM -3.5.

Admittedly, they played without their QB for the first quarter, but they still only put up 6 points on us in 3 quarters with him.

...it's more that he took advantage of Conference USA's football teams' relative weakness when compared to teams in BCS conferences. The Golden Eagles were only okay in the post-Favre early-to-mid 1990s and USM's situation improved when Conference USA was created with guaranteed bowl alignments. That being said, I've been a Bower fan and didn't think he should have been fired.

there is nowhere for southern miss to go provided they stay in conference usa. if they would have gone undefeated with that *** clown schedule they would likely have gone to the liberty bowl. they would have been like boise state last year when they went undefeated and didnt make the bcs. so it doesnt matter who the coach is, the best you can do is play a "middle of the pack" team from the sec. so keep playing the female institute of the deaf and blind game in and game out. and keep going to the new orleans bowl ( we pretty much paid jackson state as much as southern got out of this game) every year and calling that a success. TO THE TOP!!!
