From the article the collegian, in 1944, immediately after the first time the lion was vandalized printed:

“While the Collegian can not suggest or condone violence in any form, it would not be surprised to learn of a person found tampering with the Shrine delivered to the Campus Patrol in a slightly battered condition due to the inevitable scuffle.”
