The 1980 MSU vs Miami game on M2M best 25 games is a great watch for a State fan. Some Jim Kelly for yo ***. Goal line stand. A terrible call against us. It seemed like Miami had five time-outs on our last drive. We still walked out of the Orange Bowl with the W. I don't remember a white boy running the triple option better than Bond, but I'm kinda a homer about the 80 season. Makes me wonder how things went down hill for Emory Bellard after seeing us with Bond just a Frosh. I was working all the time back then so any memory help appreciated.

Bob Tyler recruited the 1980-81 team. Once Tyler recruits started graduating, "Memory" couldn't replace them. He helped break our Moss Point Pipeline, plus by the time he left most HS coaches in the State couldn't stand him.

There's two ways to execute a wishbone-either have superior athletes (like Oklahoma) or have intelligent football players (like the service academies). By the time "Memory" left, we had neither. The 1983 team was a foreshadowing of our 2003 team.

At the time, they were just another mid-major independent. They had a good season that year, but that was their first bowl season (they beat VA Tech in the Peach Bowl) since 1966 and they would miss out on a bowl game the next two years before stunning Nebraska in the Orange Bowl on 1/2/84.

One of the years we beat Miami, they lost only two games, us and Arkansas, both of which they had winning touchdowns called back. They were a top ten team that year. I think we played them at home that year and their Arkansas game was at Fayetteville

However, they didn't go to a bowl that year, so I assume they either weren't a top 10 team that year or they were on probation. They went 9-3 in 1980, the other year we beat them.
