heard him on SEC channel talking about what coaches have to do now, especially in certain positions like QB. He said nobody wants to hear or talk about development, and players are reluctant to hang around for the opportunity to grow. He said for many of the top teams the older players (i.e. 5th or 6th year) would be guys who were in the two deep early in their career. not as likely to find the player who emerges very late. the ones who are down in the depth chart wind up moving on - he didn't say they were processed out. Just they move on.

this all seems like what we are seeing now, but one thing he said I have not heard from any other coach and that is you need a plan for depth at positions that hit the portal faster - QB, WR, RB is what he mentioned. He said the days are over when anyone is going to keep 3-4 high end QB recruits on the roster. So his comment was you need to find players who are on the two deep who can be backups at another position or move players around. He mentioned that their #4 QB at one point was in the two deep WR group. Former HS QB who they had to make sure could come in for emergency. The NFL already does this now. His point was that he needed to start thinking different about players and where they fit. Maybe you are loaded at one position and need a player in another position where a kid who might transfer could be moved and fit for the team.

he ended by saying that the graduation rate is now a calculus problem, as so many guys who enter never stay at the school they started.
