All these teams…err, I mean collectives…are shelling out big bucks for players. Even average players are getting paid. Reality is, the vast majority are still gonna be so-so. I know the hope is that if you spend a lot on NIL that CFP appearances will follow, but nobody is spending in a vacuum. Everyone else is spending on NIL as well, so there’s really not much getting ahead to be done. A few teams here and there may excel at it, but it’s really not anything that will allow many middling teams to make the jump to elite.

What will the long-term result be when teams are chucking all this money at NIL, but they’re still going 7-5 or 8-4 every year? Or even 6-6? Do you keep paying?

I guess this is not much different than the facilities wars. Programs were forced to build incredible luxury facilities, simply to maintain their status quo in the sport. In our case, we were told the new facilities would greatly help with recruiting, which would then, presumably show itself in the win loss record. Thus far we have yet to see much result from that.

Fans as a whole are stupid. Beamer got a raise to $6 million a year after 2 years and a 15-11 record and no other program even remotely interested in hiring him and the fans kept sending in the checks. Every program says the answer to every problem is more money from the fans and the fans keep sending more and being proud of it, even when their team continues to disappoint. A championship is always a year away if the team can get the "support" from the fans it needs to build facilities or pay coaches or pay NIL to players and recruits. Schools are getting obscene money from tv contracts, more annually than most programs brought in from all sources not long ago and it still isn't enough.

People can spend their money on whatever they want but in the end, college football is nothing more than entertainment. When the entertainment value drops below the value of the money demanded to watch it, the fans will stop sending in their money. I think NIL is still sort of the shiny new toy and lots of fans are still enthralled with the idea of being able to buy a championship team. I also think, as you mentioned, after a few 8-4, 7-5 even 9-3 non championship seasons, the fans are going to begin to hesitate to send money in to the NIL.

Or is it just the new baseline? Years ago it was building facilities. You had to buolf top notch facilities just to keep up. Now it seems burning through NIL cash is the new baseline. Teams….err, collectives….are gonna spend hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars just to keep winning at their current pace.

Does this mean all the female student "recruiting hosting committees" are out of business now or have they also taken on the added duties of delivering the $$$$$?
