He’s managed to pull some magic out of his backside his first 2 seasons to make something out of nothing. This team is going the opposite direction, looking worse and worse each week. If one position group takes a step forward, another one takes 2 steps back. We don’t look prepared or well-coached at all.

Worse, he never seems to have a good explanation for why. Maybe he knows the team sucks but is just too nice to say so publicly.

And I should hasten to add, I like Beamer and hope he’s a long-term solution here. We just need to face up to reality on some things.

This program always seems to digress after something good happens, only Spurrier reversed that

Recruiting is the key to winning and Beamer is quite a salesman to be selling this product to recruits who would never have taken our calls before now. Most of his top recruits have not made it on the field or even on campus yet. His early success without his recruits and the excellent transfers he did bring in i.e. Rattler, Wells, etc. gave him some early success which raised expectations and has caused some to criticize. If our goal is long term success, unlike the brief Spurrier years, give Beamer time to get all his pieces, including coordinators, in place and let's see what we become and evaluate.

Agree that recruiting is one of the keys but teams like Texas A&M have proven that quality coaching is required.

Spurrier's 3rd year also spiraled badly, though it had a very promising start. This one has pretty much been crap from the start.

That 3rd year led to some key changes by Spurrier and it must do the same for Beamer.

He's absolutely got to make changes.

That's why I included coordinators in my post - defensive changes have to be made.

At a minimum White is gone. I simply don't see any way around that. Even as upbeat as Beamer can be, I don't think even he can come up with a justification for retaining White.

And, frankly, I think he should be looking for upgrades across the board. Even if a group hasn't performed as disastrously as the defense, if Beamer thinks we can upgrade in an area, he needs to pull the trigger.

The two biggest things a head coach does is evaluate recruit talent and evaluate assistant talent.

Disagree. He's doing what most coaches have done here. Historically, we've had plenty of 4 stars. We've had some 5 stars too. We've had 2 stars blow up into allstars and vice versa. However, we've typically had good/pretty good (sometimes great) RBs, and since abt 2000 we've had our share of DBs. But we've been avg at best in those areas under Beamer. Truthfully, we've been below avg so far.

Probably the best coaching staff top to bottom was Morrison, but he wasn't the greatest recruiter. Those were different times though.

I agree that our recruiting is about on par with where we usually are. Mid-to-low teens to mid-20s.

Agree. At this point all of the coaches on his initial staff have been given ample opportunity to perform. There are plenty enough case studies going on right now where it's not a good idea to have an itchy trigger finger. Go look at Clem. It was all Streeter and DJU's fault (even though they had both improved over the previous year). Got rid of them both and they're probably going to have their worst year since 2010. They need 2 wins to get to a bowl. They have: @ NCST, ND, GT, UNC, @ USC. There a possibility they'll miss a bowl for the first time since 1998, and this is AFTER hiring the "best OC in the country". They are averaging 19.8 PPG in P5 games (includes 3 OT periods) . Meanwhile DJU is leading Oregon St to a 6-1 record ranked #11 in the country. Sometimes things aren't always what they seem.

If we're being honest with ourselves, we've typically only gotten top talent b/c they were instate and were Gamecock fans....or Clem fires their HC in the middle of one of the most fertile recruiting periods this state has ever seen. We cleaned up in the wake of them firing Bowden.

To me, it is more impressive that Beamer is doing it outside of SC. He's actually developing new territory (while keeping upper hand instate), instead of just waiting on a bumper crop of instate talent to come through. To me, the biggest thing that has perplexed me is the lack of QB development in our program. It's transcended decades. That's something I feel good about with Beamer. We've had 2 QBs drafted in our history. About to have a third, and Sellers looks very promising, Reno coming in 2024, and we already have a stud from AL on the hook for the 2025 class. The book on Beamer will not be written after 2.5 or 3 years. It will be written after 5.
