I think he can be a really good "thunder" type back behind a big O-line that can hold blocks for more then a nano-second. He can't burst through tight spaces and has lost some speed, but he can block, catch, and pick up tough yards in the right system. Also, let's not forget his stated goal, getting to the NFL. Sure, ita everyone's goal, but this guy sang in right away. Clearly his best chance at that isn't 2nd or 3rd on our depth chart. He needs to get 200 healthy carries on tape next year.

Likely one more right? I hope Ford stays and gets a shot - I think he’s most talented of what we have (minus the two FR).
Like you, i think Ford is quite good. Would like to see him carry more. Also i like Lee and Holmes. I was not as high on Cain as most. Meh, clean ur locker out, coward.
Penn St is for those that don’t flee when it’s nut-cutting time.
Cain’s life leason is to flee when times get tough. No offense, but, beat it!

saw this question elsewhere but not answered:

since Spring 2022 classes started yesterday, is he still enrolled and if so, is the Athletic Department on the hook for his tuition and room/board?

Meh, Ford stinks. He doesn’t do anything particularly well.
Disagree. He's probably the best blocking RB on the team. He picked up blitzes much better than Cain and Lee did. Also outside of Holmes is the fastest.
I think he should have been used more this season after the starting RB's weren't doing much.

Pretty good kick returner too.

Anyone know if Cain got his degree? I hope so. I'm surprised by this. I thought either Ford and/or Holmes would leave because neither has gotten alot of carries but both have talent. I thought Cain would be back and ready to go after being 1 year removed from the injury.

I think 2 highly rated incoming recruits may have influenced his decision. Oh well, all the best to him. He seemed like a really good kid.

I guess I'm in the minority that see Lee as clearly the best actual runner with the ball in his hands this past season. It seems his blitz pickup was not as good as either Ford or Cain, but Lee broke tackles and got extra yards which is the recipe required against top teams. Obviously a complete back gets the extra yards, has the moves and speed for "take it too the house" runs, and is an effective blocker. but none of the 5 RB's in 2021 had more than 1 or 2 of those qualities.

It would be great if only Cain and Lovett of the 2021 RB's move on, but I'm expecting another one to move on. Singleton and Allen are very good and the returning backs know they'll have to compete with and beat out the two new RB's as well as the returnee's to be one of the likely 2 that start out as the featured backs in 2022. And even if a couple of the returnee's hold off the new guys this Spring if Singleton is really as advertised, and every indication is that he is, the returners will lose carries as the 2022 season goes along.

Maybe the other 3, Lee, Ford, and Holmes, stick around through Spring practice and see for themselves how they stack up with Singleton and Allen, and then the one at the bottom of the 3 moves on then. There would still be opportunities to transfer at the end of the Spring semester.

It would seem that Cain wants to find his new home quickly, enroll (if he hasn't already), and then participate in Spring practice with his new team.

At what level program does anyone believe Cain can find a spot?

A team like VA Tech? Would Cincy take him?

With his injuries and slow return to form I can't see him ending up at a top tier P5 program. He surely wants to play a lot so he may have to go down in class to a team such as Temple to insure he gets a feature back slot.

It's going to be an interesting Spring practice, and I doubt word will leak out regarding an updated pecking order until the next RB leaves. Also interesting that Holmes redshirted this past season and is still at PSU. Maybe he's patient enough, and happy enough in Happy Valley, to just wait his turn and work to get better. Can't afford to lose them all and just have the 2 freshmen for the Fall.........

It seems like a lot of people assume these transfers are solely the choice of the player. I'm not so sure that may be true in every instance.
You could well be right. Or at least the coaches “motivate” players to leave by telling them where they stand on the pecking order at the end of the season. Hard to know for sure.

Probably right about the blocking, I don’t know. But he does nothing as a ball carrier. I’d be fine with him moving on.

Have you ever improved your position with a job change? That’s all this is. Coward is unnecessary

He did appear to be a bit quicker in the bowl game but who knows what his new post injury max is, doubtful its 2019 stuff.

Plus who wants to get 4 carries a game with a bad OL, the rotation might sound great but it keeps all 3 or 4 guys out of rhythm. Would like to see RB1 get 15+ Carrie's, RB2 get 5-7 and scraps for the rest.

Most fans knew one of the RB's would enter the portal. Honestly they all had their shot to turn corners, stiff arm or bowl people over, the burden should't lie totally on the o line.
Just like Levis who had his shot, wish him well , but competition is good , especially new competition.

@CvilleElksCoach Any insight into this?
Not much detail. I know he is a great kid. Maybe the bowl trip to Florida made him wish he was back there. I think his health has frustrated him. when healthy he’s a good back. I personally think Lee is a bit better. With the two frosh RBs being added to the room it’s going to get tight. I would not be surprised to see Holmes portal out too.

The real test is getting one of these guys to separate themselves. I know that’s what James and Mike want. Then you will see the committee stuff end.
