At first I thought this was going to be about him taking a coordinator job like Chip Kelly did, and I was going to say that’s batshit crazy given his contract

I am convinced Saban did this same thing for years to get big money guys to step up to the plate with him

He can earn it back by winning at least 9 games in each of the next 9 seasons. I don't see him being employed that long, and it's not clear how the $4.5 mill factors into his buyout.

Maybe FSU has to keep paying him annually if they win 9 games, even if he is no longer the coach?

I think Saban used winning as a way to get the big money guys to step up.
I think he showed the ROI model of championships to the state of Alabama, the University Board, and the Tuscaloosa City Council. Winning is secondary to winning it all, by far.

There you go with that silly theory again.

Alabama is not a good example for you. Bama was Bama long before Saban got there, and they would still be Bama today even if they had never hired Saban....although with fewer championships.

I cannot imagine the REC ever telling Saban - or any Head Football Coach - "No, we can't do that for you." They have wealthy boosters falling all over each other trying to feel important by donating whatever is necessary. Along with a lot of money that isn't necessary.

I'm not sure why you're "convinced" Saban used his own money to pay players. It's certainly possible, I just can't see him needing to that. Maybe if a player came to him needing money ASAP, but even then I think he could have easily asked a booster to reimburse him.

What a cuck. Because they'll still fire him next year if he falls short.

Bama was not Bama again until Saban got there and got a "new plan" in place. I guess we will never know unless a book comes out in 25 years that explains how the private bank and private player deals were done prior to NIL. I am of the opinion that "the plan" was 90% financial and 10% football. The one and only goal to justify the expense is the national championship regularly.
