......#1 NW Rankin tonight to advance to the next round of the MHSAA playoffs. Hey, I have to get my sports fix from something! It sure isn't coming from MSU right now.

is that a pretty big rivalry for those two teams? i don't know much about the jackson area baseball teams. do you know who clinton plays next?

i seem to remember the arrows kicking everyone's *** in soccer a number of years back and remember the vicksburg and warren central folks hating them with a passion.

I'm not sure how big a rivalry it is, but NW Rankin had won something like 6 consecutive against Clinton before this playoff series. Clinton wasn't on anyone's radar this season, while NW Rankin once again was the top team in the state, so it's a big upset.

I used to keep up with CHS baseball like a passion back from about 1990 to 1998. I got to know their former coach back then very well, so I started supporting his teams. The coach was Doug Hutton, who was a big sports star(mainly basketball) at MSU back in the 60s. Clinton's best teams were under his direction, so they've fallen on mostly hard times since he retired. This year's team has apparently gotten hot at the right time, kinda like last year's MSU baseball team.

that Madison Central and NW Rankin have a bigger rivalry than Clinton- NWR. I would love for the MHSAA to make a suburban Jackson league with MC, Ridgeland, Clinton, Brandon, Pearl, NW Rankin, Terry, and Florence. Not gonna happen though. All of those schools are rivals to some degree, I kind of threw Florence in there because I couldn't come up with an 8th public school that would fit, and that's the best I could do. Maybe Madison will have a Gluckstadt HS one day and solve my problem . All those schools usually have baseball teams that are at least respectable.

I believe Clinton will have to play Tupelo or DeSoto County- probably Tupelo. Also, Oak Grove got knocked off by Terry.

Oh, and anyone in the Jackson area that wants to see some good baseball, the 5A State Championship is a pretty good local event to go to at Trustmark Park.

thanks for the info on who they play next. also the suburban league would be too good of an idea for jacktown to come up with it.

The problem with your proposed suburban league is that Ridgeland, Pearl, and Florence are in Class 4A and the others are in 5A.
Now if there weren't any classifications, maybe the old Little Dixie Conference could be recreated.

the MHSAA has all of the suburban schools divided with the JPS schools because they do it based on location. Which sucks because I think the suburb people want to play each other, and the JPS people want to play each other, so the fans lose.

that is fair but i typically don't put a lot of faith into who is making decisions in jackson. i lived nearby for many years and in town for a while. just my take. hell i have some friends who love the place.

Since 4A and 5A are so similar as far as competition, I would like to see them have just four classifications with the top classificaiton being really big and based on rivalries and what the fans would want to see rather than attendance and location. Almost like a superleague, so to speak.

I live near Jackson as well and I like it pretty well, and you're right the leadership is VERY lacking. I live in the suburbs, and work downtown, so I get a good mix.

You don't need to throw Florence in there with those other teams. I played baseball there and it's not the same playing field. They are 4A, yet a small 4A. They were borderline 3A-4A when I was there. They are the Alcorn State playing in the NFC East when it comes to baseball when you are talking about NW Rankin and those other teams.

because the entire high school divisional format is to regionalize teams, determine the best in the regions, and play it off to determine a state champion. And you DEFINITELY can't have less than 5 divisions now, in fact, forming a 6A division is probably not far off, just from the sheer number of schools. If it weren't for the MPSA, you probably would already have that 6th classification.
