I don't have a "kill bigger deer" quote to spur the team on like cowbell9 did last year- which apparently worked as we came out on top during the 14 hour nine-inning marathan thanks to the umpire who obviously had nothing better to do with life, including go to work the next day.
But as we all know Ole Miss is having a pretty good year, and we have had the year from Hell- Ricky Bowen's fluke 2-hitter against Ole Miss and our fluke walk off home run against South Alabama non-withstanding. When one of the season high lights is a win over South Alabama, you know its been a rough year. Oh, and the fact that my object of disdain, The Legend is retiring and even better, someone has the balls to tell him we are not hiring his boy even though he thinks he invented baseball- and apparently, even Polk has fooled a few of our alumni into believeing that as well.
But I digress, I live in the Jackson area, have lived here my whole life, and the State/Ole Miss Mayor's Trophy/Gov. Cup game is the biggest game in the state of Mississippi every year, and not only that it's the biggest game in Jackson every year, with exception of an occassional NFL exhibition football game. And while it's "not cool" to hate Ole Miss on this board, let's just say that I don't care for them very much. I don't hate them to the point that it reaches obsessive limits mind you- I can eat at Abner's and date Ole Miss alums and etc. But I still want to beat the crap out of them nonetheless. And even if we do lose, I'd like to be at the very least somewhat respectable despite the fact someone in charge of our team would rather lose 21-0 than 2-1. I espcially like to win in my hometown at my favorite sport-- baseball. I have gone to this game every year since 1985.
Now that said, I know that Polk is going to treat this like "an exhibition game" while Bianco is probably going to let Lance Lynn and Cody Satterwhite go up against some hapless walk-on. I know that we have guys with pulled hamstrings, dislocated kneecaps, and bruised hearts. I know that Polk is going to keep hapless walk-on pitcher out there until he gives up seven runs, and then he will start to get the bullpen loose- and then Jesse Carver will come in. I know that the team has probably mailed it in- and I can't totally blame them. So, my plea is this- just try to make this respectable. I know the odds are long, but lets face it, you have nothing to play for. You ain't going nowhere after May 17. No coveted Regional in Arizona State, no SEC Tournament, and everyone gets a trophy at the Cadence Bank Classic. This is it guys. If somehow you can pull your hamstrings together and just throw some strikes, and maybe steal an occassional base or two- who knows what might happen? This is baseball after all. You've taken a lot of crap from your fans- well deserved mind you- but please do something to make us proud of you for a couple of days at least. When Ole Miss is in Omaha this year and hosting another SR, at least give me the joy in the back of my mind of saying, hey we won the Gov. Cup, and that's something.
That is all.
