Oddly enough my wife asked a question that I have never thought about (hint: not sports related)

We leased the land from the Cubans way back before their revolution. Edit: aparently we pay Cuba a litlle over $4k a year for it no end to the lease.
And I think Cuba has never cashed a check for it as some form of protest. The current regime doesn’t want us there.

I have been there. Not stationed but passing through. It would not be an enjoyable place to be station. It's like the DMZ in Korea. Mine fields and loaded weapons.

Yikes. I guess I never really thought about it, but I did not know it was that highly contested.

I've never been but probably 10 guys in my 2531 school asked for their next station to be Gitmo but I think they all got Okinowa instead. Nobody wanted Okinowa.

The Guantanamo Bay base is a leftover from the aftermath of the Spanish American War. We leased it from the newly independent Cuba.

What branch is that? I always thought Okinowa was a highly desired station, but that could have been more to do with the folks I heard it from.

I wonder why they wanted there. There is absolutely nothing that I could see. Might have changed. Now as far as Okinawa goes it depends on what base you are on. I was with 12th Marines at Camp Foster. It is in the middle of Okinawa City close to the Airforce base and right next to Naha City. It was a pretty good place to be stationed. If you are at Camp Swab or Henson those did suck. The great thing about being in Okinawa is its location. You can catch a MAC flight to Australia, Thailand, Mainland Japan or any location in the S. Pacific. I was there 12 months, and it did get old, and you longed for a round eye woman after a while.

Seems like a good deal for us, what with all the overcrowded prisons and jails here, and the associated costs to run them. Penal colonies have always been a thing, so hopefully we'll look for more opportunities with countries who need the jobs and cash. Maybe Venezuelans can stay there and make money off of us by working as prison guards instead of risking their lives trekking all the way up here - it's a win/win.

Not to mention, sending our worst of the worst criminals offshore doesn't sound like a bad thing.

Okinawa has to be 100x better than Gitmo. At Gitmo you can’t even get off base and it’s hot as sh**

USMC, 2531 is Field Radio Operator. Mid 90's they were locking the bases down apparently due to some idiots sexually assaulting the locals.

They must have watched a "A Few Good Men" too many times. They thought it'd be cool and we were hearing nightmares from our instructors that had just gotten back from Okinawa in 93. Hell, my school was at 29 palms so maybe they just wanted anywhere but MCAGCC. I was going to the Reserves so I knew where I was headed...Jackson, MS.

I've overnighted in Okinawa, but no other visits. The scuttlebutt going around the AF was it is a good place to be stationed, until a Marine raped a local, then there was hell to pay, restrictions, lockdowns, civil unrest, etc. I'm not implying that Marines actually raped anyone (other than Seaman, is that really rape?), just reporting the scuttlebutt.

I was 0861 10th Marines. I was always attached to the infantry I was lucky enough I had the same two radio operators with me. They learned to do my job and all I learn from them was if the radio stops working just throw it on the ground. That usually worked.

Step 1: Drop It
Step 2: Change the Battery
Step 3: Clean the terminals with a pencil eraser

Just watching the news, and they were talking about Gitmo... said it had some 30,000 beds, and we were planning to use it.
Holding facility, I think.
