Franklin and Pry messed up with Parsons. The #1 DE in High School should’ve stayed there and played there immediately at PSU and would’ve made an instant impact like he is in the NFL. This whole wasting the spring practices on trying him at MLB was a joke. It slowed him down, confused him, wasted his whole first season as a backup to Koa at OLB.
There was no need to waste a year of his development and production on learning a new position, when DE is the position he was thriving at since God knows how long. He should’ve been our version of the Bosa’s or Chase Young.

We only got ONE good year out of him, actually maybe just the back half of that season, but as a DE he would’ve been unstoppable from the jump. This is not the first time that we’ve had players show their skills better in the pros than at PSU.
Apke, Amani O, Trevor Williams, McGovern, Oweh, Jesse James are just a few that come to mind.

Did he want to play DE or LB? Is it possible he doesn't come here if we intended to play him at DE? Do you know these things? I doubt it.

Is it at all possible that maybe the Penn State coaching staff were key factors in the development of those players?

Watching Owen play for the Ravens today. (I am not a Ravens fan). I have to agree. Not sure that we use the talent we have recruited in the best way. Parsons is the best (worst) example. He should have been let loose on the D from the beginning.

Oweh played last year. Did the coaches tell him not to get to the QB? Not to disrupt? Why Oweh when other defenders with this staff were effective?

We have an effective defense. It would be even more effective if we had an offense. In the case of Oweh my assertion is that he seems more effective at Baltimore than I thought he would be given his play at Penn State. He had 0 sacks his last year at Penn State and has 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles through week 13 with the Ravens. Maybe it was all PSU scheme, but he sure looks better with the Ravens.

Today he's playing LB and a floater, with 2 sacks and a forced fumble, in the first half. Maybe learning how to play LB has served him well in the NFL. Made him a better player overall. Maybe.

Parsons is a bona fide star in the NFL as a linebacker, but Franklin’s a moron because he didn’t play him at defensive end?

Imagine how pissed folks would be if all these guys bombed in the NFL.

If next year they move Parsons to running back and he leads the league in rushing heads will be exploding all over this board.
I actually fantasied about this just an hour ago. (About Parsons playing RB, not heads exploding.)

And the entire NFL messed up, including the Dallas Cowboys. They all wanting him to play LB. it’s just that he’s athletic enough to play just about anything, and the learning curve for edge rusher is shorter than LB.

You should been around when Joe was criticized for not playing Arrington as a starter as a true freshman

Don’t lie. We know it was about heads exploding.

Sometimes, I fantasize about the heads of all of the board extremists (i.e., Anti-Franklins and the Franklin Apologists) exploding. Is that wrong?

Lol. The Cowboys did they same thing he was an inside LBer until they got a bunch of DE hurt/suspended. They just threw him in there and hoped
Exactly. The Cowboys drafted Pardons as a LB, the same position he played at PSU. The Cowboys moved him to DE solely because of injuries to two starting DEs and a backup. He was back playing LB today because Lawrence and Gregory are back. Owen is playing DE for the Ravens, the same position he played at PSU. Unbelievable.

While many posters were knocking Oweh's performance last year and questioning his ability to contribute in the NFL based on his production, analysts were praising his on-field performance and citing it as evidence that he was more than just a great athlete. IIRC, the argument was that as Oweh's presence and performance opened things up for the rest of the defense, and one could see it in the team statistics when comparing when he was on and off the field.

As for Parsons, he seems to excel in whatever role Dallas gives him. One of the talking heads was talking about his sack ratio for the number of times he rushes the passer - he's in a class by himself. At the same time, because he can do so many other things exceptionally well and Dallas uses him in multiple roles, it's all but impossible to scheme against him. Making him an edge rusher most of the time would take that away.
