and Zac Selmon can do himself a lot of good by signing Jans to a long term contract. Like 10+ years for a nice tidy sum with a significant buyout. I generally know a winner when I see one and Jans is that guy. We need to lock him in now before we embark on a historic season and some other really big basketball boy snatches him away. Sell him on this being sort of a lower pressure job than most and kick in a Target store with some NIL money for him to rep some red bullseye box store stuff. I'm willing to donate to a drive to bring a Target to Starkvegas. Any takers?

Jans isn’t the type to stay somewhere very long. Just enjoy the moment.

Have no issue with our program serving as a stepping stone, as long as you leave it in a better place than when you arrived and remain fully committed to its success without getting distracted by other opportunities—unlike Dan Mullen. Jans looked at / wanted the Arkansas job last year. Hopefully, ZS is well prepared.

I'm not saying you're wrong but I'm curious what your reasoning is? As far as HC jobs, he was at Bowling Green and got fired for shenanigans, was at NM St, and then took a much better job with us.

We know he has interviewed, but otherwise do we *know* Jans isn't looking to stay anywhere long? To me it's equally plausible he's perfectly happy in Starkville and simply wants to maximize his income.

I think if Jans can get some tournament success this year - he will realize he can win here like Pearl is doing at Auburn.

He won't be leaving because of $$ for him or the program. It's just if he wants to leave for a bigger program. I honestly don't see a better program in the SEC outside of Kentucky.

I think it’s possible. I believe he is the type of coach that could turn our program into a “second tier” type team, with the “bluebloods” being the first tier (and he is well on his way to doing it). A team that makes the tournament almost every year, wins a game or two in it most years, and makes a run in the tournament once every 3-5 years. I’d like to keep him around, but realistically speaking, if we are making the tournament almost every year and making a little noise every once in a while, the bluebloods will come calling eventually. But that will be okay because that will mean he left our program much better than he found it. Just my $0.02.

Depends on his mindset. He's making 4.2 million per year. That's enough money, that for the most part, he doesn't have to think twice about spending on whatever he wants. Going to a traditional powerhouse isn't going to change how his financial situation is in his mind, but if he really is super competitive and loves winning more in the tourney, he may leave. Personally, I would stay at MSU because I think he could eventually win it all here in basketball. It only really takes 7 players and these days we can pay them openly. This isn't yesteryears basketball environment where we were handicapped. If he just likes a name and logo on the jersey, well, he can't be helped.

There's not a blue blood outside of Kentucky. But Texas and A&M could both offer NIL money in support that we couldn't match. In theory so could plenty of other schools, I'm just not sure which ones would be willing to take resources from football, and UT and A&M are the ones that have more money than they could realistically spend on NIL. We have benefited historically from having some dedicated basketball boosters that cared about basketball practically to the exclusion of football. Hopefully that will continue in the new NIL world and we don't get swamped by all the fans that were willing to give but didn't want to pass to much under the table.

One of these days we're going to have a coach that enjoys the relatively low pressure yet ability to win here at MSU.

I just have zero confidence in Sooner Selmon.

I feel the same. Especially for basketball. You need 8 good players, not 80. Starkville is doable as long as the administration is committed.

10 year contracts aren't allowed in the MS schools so there's that

This year's men's basketball jerseys really aren't bad at all. They are better than the banner and the script and it's the best they've looked in a while. They actually got that right.

You know, I was kinda looking forward to the day when Pearl would move on from Auburn, but now that you mention it, I think we all know who the bastard AD there is coming after if/when that day comes.

One way to keep Jans is give him access to more NIL money along with a big pay raise. I would divert some from football to keep Jans. Its a good ROI

They've been getting around that by offering longer contracts guaranteed by another body. You can only offer a 4 year contract by the university. The foundations are offering longer ones (Chris Beard has a 6 year contract)

From an August CL article - "Mississippi state law prevents public employees from signing contracts longer than four years, but Ole Miss and Mississippi State work around this by negotiating separate, longer contracts with their private athletic foundations. The majority of the compensation comes from the foundation contracts."

Fair enough and like... obviously the worst-case scenario is the most likely outcome around here. I think that philosophy principle is called Bully's Razor?

Agreed, we've found a good coach and SHOULD do what it takes to keep him.
