On Friday, Rams offensive coordinator Liam Coen left his NFL post to take the same position with the Kentucky Wildcats.

Has to be much more to this story. Leaving the NFL for the same position in college.

Most Rams coaches are looking for next job - it's been a rough year for them. At minimum, there will be some level of house cleaning of the staff in the offseason. There are also rumors that Sean McVay may even retire, in which case most/all of the coaching staff will be let go.

This doesn't likely have much to do with 'Kentucky paying up'.

So, how much is Kentucy paying Coen?
Does it really matter? Those same people singing, Kentucky’s praises for landing this guy are the same ones dogging our potential hire of DL. Sure the Rams won a Super Bowl, but like I said in another post in the NFL, it’s about having the best players. The Rams now have many injured players, and if you’ll notice their offense is not working the same. They are not good. This guy probably bolted before he could get fired. That’s the way the NFL works. So Kentucky did not pull off some magical coup.

But many of our “fans” never miss a chance to whine about something.

I was asking in response to the comment that Kentucy is 'paying up'. My guess is that the person who wrote that doesn't even know how much Coen is making. So, I thought I'd ask to find out.

Do their careers come across as similar? You mentioned one won a super bowl, and we know the other was a bottom feeder for 5 straight years, being named the nfl's worst play caller.

While this goes against the "who can we get to come here" narrative, you guys are right that this nfl situation is unique.

I know….your question was my point. Other posters wanting to make it out like KY paid up and we (Tanner, Shane, SC) are too cheap. Yet they haven’t told us what KY is paying. You know if we had hired the same guy, it wouldn’t matter how much we paid, we would have posters complaining that we hired a crappy NFL offensive coordinator because his team is currently like four and seven. It’s comical. But I was it directing my response to your post at you, you were making a good point questioning how much KY paid.

When you analyze the NFL, there are many teams that stay in the bottom feeder status for numerous years no matter who the coach is. They also seem to make the dumbest moves with players.

The Rams have been really good for a while, but didn’t win the Super Bowl until they got that really good quarterback. But do you not think it’s strange this offensive coordinator is leaving when his team is losing? And the reason they are losing is because they have lost a bunch of their talent, so yeah in the NFL and College it takes the best players, but good coaching can overcome small talent gaps in college. In the NFL coaching needs the best players.

bottom line is you don’t hang in the NFL numerous years being bad at your job. So if the guy from Arkansas we were considering was under bad teams and head coaches, who were on a short leash, when that coach was let go, I find it a plus that other teams hired him.

Personally I don’t care about any of them. I was just pointing out we have certain fans that want to dog, Beamer and Tanner and the entire program at every turn. So if this offensive coordinator hire by Kentucky is the big in our face coup I would like to see it. Trust me it’s not sending ripples through the rest of the SEC.

I couldn't find the salary for this new contract. Interestingly, I saw where Stoops had upped his money to 1.1M (from about 750K) right before Coen
left to go to the NFL. All things considered with the one and done OC they just let go I'd expect his new salary to be north of the 1.1M. Probably be
multi-year this time around. Just guesses on my part.

I disagree on one point. The NFL has a lot more parity than college football. If the Arkansas guy stunk because of a talent gap, that gap will only be wider between us and the top half of the SEC.

I see where this isn't some bug coup, as you pointed out, the staff probably knows their all on the way out. But it also goes against the notion that we can't get "anyone good" to come here.

I think we're both just arguing against the fringe "everything stinks" and "everything is perfect" posters.

Did he voluntarily leave for the NFL for more money last time around or told to look for other employment?

You summed it up precisely. I often say I can't imagine playing QB in the NFL as fast and hard as most all defenses are. I think all NFL players are damn good, but the best teams seem to have more of the damn good ones. Kind of like Bama and such. They stay up there because of talent. So if a coach can recruit, I prefer that in college. We seemed better when we had the best players. Spurrier could lure the best players, which helped him be good.
