... sorry if you're expecting my normal post about Rev War or early American history.

I do recall being pretty taken back when the alien burst out of the chest cavity.

It’s O.K., Tom. This is much better than anything our founding fathers did.

We were at a between-semesters lull in the office and asked our secretaries to cover for us as four or five of my co-workers and I sneaked out of the office and walked over to the Warner Theater in downtown Pittsburgh to watch the new movie, "Alien." The Warner was old, cavernous and dark and only about a half dozen other people were in the theater that afternoon. When the baby alien popped out of John Hurt's chest, my friend, the school psychologist, screamed, vaulted out of his seat, and landed on the floor in the row behind us.

I'm not much of a sci-fi / fantasy fan, but "Alien" is among my all-time favorites. Great design elements and atmospherics set by the opening sequences. Sigourney Weaver said a couple years later that she felt they should have filmed the final sequence with Sigourney in the nude as she slipped into the space suit to fight the alien and eject it from the escape pod.

Aliens is one of the greatest war movies ever. (I like Alien okay.)

On May 25, 1935, Jessie Owens equaled or broke 4 world records in at the Big Ten Track meet. Did it all in 45 minutes.

On May 25, 1848, Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore opened in London. Pretty sure @fairgambit was in the audience.

While Alien is a great movie not many know that the story line parallels the story line of a earlier movie “It the terror from outer space” This earlier sci-fy movie is about a Martian that stows away on a space ship returning to earth. The crew has to fight the alien and after using rifles and grenades to no effect, trick it into being sucked out of the ship.

I enjoyed that movie. There's a sole survivor from the first failed expedition that they're taking back to earth to face the death penalty for killing his crew (without any evidence), and then at the end give him a 'sorry about that'.
