The Georgia/Tech game should have ended in a tie. Unless you're in the playoffs and need to determine a winner, 4 OTs is plenty.

A tie there - against an unranked team at home - would have greatly helped our chances to get into the playoff. Instead, UGA actually moves up?!?

I wouldn't want to playTech right now either, tho.

Yes, there is something poetic about a tie. Sometimes two teams played such a great game that it's an injustice to declare one the winner on the basis of two-point conversion plays.

And certainly when you are trying to split hairs between teams to determine playoff or conference championship participants, it's helpful to have a third category of results by which to measure them.

One OT is too many.

Yes, it's an injustice that Tech came away with a loss in that game. Not a fan of OT myself, but I'd say 1-2 OT sessions is plenty. If it hasn't been determined by that point, there's obviously not a better team that day.

Would UGA have dropped out of the playoffs?

I see no reason for ties in any sporting event. As long as the contestants can continue to play, let them play until one of them wins. I don't like the current tie breaker format, the old one where each team started on the 25 and played alternating possessions until one team won was far superior.

The game is tied before it starts. Why go through the effort of playing at all if the end result will be the same as before the game is played?

One thing about the OT rule I don't like - in the 2nd OT you have to go for a 2 pt conversion after the TD. If the first team scores, but misses the 2pt conversion, why not just allow the 2nd team to kick the XP? Game could have been over then.

I dunno. It would be like forcing two boxers to keep boxing until one just fell over from exhaustion and declaring the remaining boxer the winner.

When you watched that game, UGA was not the better team. When you got to 8 OT, it boils down to dumb luck.

That is actually how boxing used to be. Boxing is a little different in that the contestants can be seriously injured due to the basic nature of the contest.

If GT was truly the better team they wouldn't have let UGA tie it up in regulation or would have won in one of the earlier OTs. I agree GT played better for almost all of the game but they let UGA come back from a 17 point deficit at the half so I'm not sure they were the better team.

Imo, because one team was forced to go for two while the other wasn't. Not fair circumstances.

If they lose to TX, yes they should be out with a 9-3-1 record. Especially with the tie at home vs unranked team.

That sounds good, but in reality and in the committes eyes, they are 10-3 in that scenario. Right?

That's the price the one team pays for not converting. Why punish the other team?

Still not nearly as unfair as the NFL OT rule that if the first team scores a TD on it's first possession, game over. Under that rule, UGa wins immediately.

Agree completely on the NFL thing. I don't like that rule.

But for the college scenario, you're still punishing one team. One HAS to go for two, the other gets to go for one. In that case, I feel the second team has a large advantage.

There's no risk of injury during an 8 OT (or even a single OT) game? Those kids were exhausted. The Tech QB was totally spent. Even the NFL has ties during the regular season. If you have to choose a winner, play an extra period. If it's still a tie, kick FGs until it's over. Dumb that the kicker is totally excluded from the OT equation after the first OT.

I don't think so. A tie is not a win. Their win was meaningless after 8 OT (at home, unranked). It's really not a win, it's a tie at that point.

I understand what you're saying, I'm just thinking that's an opinion.

They're ranking and official record show it as a win.

Exactly.
At that point, during regulation and now into the 8th OT, both teams have gone through their full resume of goal line plays, and players on both sides are completely exhausted. You are way beyond the point of outscheming the other side.

"Lets try this play again, and hope it works this time"
