According to the Ncaa website, in the semifinals of the 400m individual dash, O'neal not only won his heat, but ran the only sub 46 second 400m of the day, making him the overall leader. His first place time was 45.56, and the second place finisher of 26 runners ran a 46.08. He'll be running for the national championship on Saturday!

Freaking amazing. Isn't he 6' 4"? If the guy can catch at all, he could be really special.

As long as we have a QB that can get it to him... Remember the Murray State game when whats his face had, like, his only 2 TDs of his career and Omarr under threw him by at least 5 yards.

God help him if Wilder turns out to be like him.

Ah, yes... His name escaped me, but it wasn't worth looking up. Man, that was one wasted scholarship.

Wilder has the potential to be one of the more explosive players in the SEC over the next few years, simply based on his track speed. He won't be quite as fast on the field as a guy like Holliday from LSU (who specializes in the 100m) but O'Neal is a foot taller.

We'll find out this fall if:

1) He can take the hits.
2) He has lateral quickness.
3) He runs good routes.
4) He can catch the ball.

If he can at least do those things at an average level of ability for an SEC player, his speed alone could make him one of the better WR's we've had in a while.

The 100m requires more football-like explosion, but I refuse to believe an All-American 400m guy can't burn some DB's on deep routes. The next questions are can he catch and can Wes Carroll throw deep enough for that track speed to matter?

. . . it won't matter how good he "could" be in football. He'll quit our glorious offense and focus totally on track. If he rarely sees the field this fall, it wouldn't surprise me to see him quit and only do track.

Question is, would we really and truly notice if a wide receiver quit our football team? It's been close to 10 years since we've had any worth much.

Maybe the reason why we've had no receiver worth much for close to 10 years, is because we've had no QB worth **** for close to 10-15 years.

If he's as good as he "could" be in football, he could eventually be NFL material. That kind of size and speed (enduring speed at that) is rare in any sport. If he's burning people in the 400m, he'll be burning people in the 4th quarter too... as long as we can get it to him. His youth also allows room for improvement. There's a lot more to like in the possibility of making the NFL than there is in being a track and field star.

I will say this... if his pigskin tools aren't as sharp as the coaches would like, I could then see him hanging up the cleats to focus on track. BUT, if he plays to his potential we'll see him in pads for the next few years.
