The irrational argument put forth for opting out after the CFP was introduced was that the CFP rendered bowl games meaningless, so why risk injury playing in a game that doesn't matter? Ok, fine, even though that really makes no sense at all since you can probably count on one hand the number of players in the history of bowl games who had their NFL careers adversely impacted by getting injured in a bowl game. It's just a red herring.
However, with the 12-team CFP, you're now playing in potentially four extra games. That increases your injury risk dramatically. The impact of the game's outcome is really irrelevant. If you suffered a career-ending injury in the 2nd round of the CFP vs the Cheez-it bowl, what does it matter?
Players aren't willing to play in a single game for fear of getting injured, but they're willing to play in potentially 4 additional games?
Nobody is thinking this through.
