Orange Bowl Culture clash

It was interesting to see the contrast in cultures tonight in the orange bowl. Both teams of course arguably deserved to be in the playoffs. In spite of George’s loss in the championship game, I don’t see how you could argue they weren’t really one of the best four teams in college football. Nevertheless, they did lose and they were excluded. Florida State likewise had a strong argument for being in the CFP but were excluded. Georgia, however seized the moment, brought their A game, and destroyed Florida State.

Likewise, Alabama last year playing with the top two picks in the NFL draft, even though they missed out on the playoffs, went out and obliterated K-State in their bowl game.

There seems to be a difference in cultures between teams that are built through the portal and teams are built from within.

The play-off committee got it right bt not letting FSU in the play offs. Why let a team in who’s starters opt and don’t want to play football .

Hard to agree with this, because they wouldn't have opted out if they were in the playoffs.

The "eye test" is bad enough, but if we start excluding people because of opt outs in previous years, I think we're going way too far down the subjective path.

Agreed. I remember at the beginning of the year, someone saying that FSU was built for the short term, a bunch of "mercenaries", etc.

They bought some players for this run, and those players bailed the minute it crashed. No big surprise.

Unfortunately I think this will be more common in the future.

If you had a football game featuring the two best teams in college football, I'm pretty sure Georgia would be in that game. FSU, most assuredly, would not.

Does anyone think that if Alabama or Georgia had to play Louisville without their starting QB, they still wouldn't have destroyed the Cardinals? Going further, if Alabama or Georgia had exactly the same opt-outs that FSU had yesterday, does anyone think there's a team in the country that could beat them 63 - 3? Based on what we saw yesterday, but for those opt-outs, FSU is considerably worse than UT-Martin.

It all goes to how a team is structured and what the culture is. Georgia was screwed just as bad in the CFP rankings as Florida State was, but they showed up and played their hearts out anyway.

And yet many are defending FSU no-showing, blaming the CFP committee for the FSU players quitting. “You didn’t give them what they thought they deserved, so of course they quit!”

Life’s tough. Most of the time you don’t get what you feel you deserve. Can’t go through your life quitting every time that happens.

So which one carries more momentum into the off-season?
They’re recruiting at a higher level than y’all are. And will finish with a much better class than you. And will be the consensus to win the ACC again. The great run in our program’s history happened the year following and embarrassing beat down in the Outback Bowl against Iowa. Off season momentum is a fan invention that doesn’t exist in the real world.

It is a bit depressing to think players don't view bowls the way they once did. I mean really not all that much has changed. Used to be one bowl was playing for a national championship. It could be argued the rest were meaningless although we know they weren't. Good match-ups were good enough and maybe the result is you move up a spot in the final poll. Back to the depressing part, for me it''s that no one seems to care about a tradition a bowl has had. The records set and the great players that participated in those bowls like the Cotton, Rose and even the Liberty. History means nothing now. No one cares. I guess you could blame corporate America for some of it but yeah culture has to be most of it. It's kinda sad to see football done like this.

Just felt like venting. Don't mind me. Happy New Year

I think those road graders on the UGA los would have beat up on FSU on the Seminoles best day.

I don’t think Georgia had nearly that many players out.
My bad it was 23 not 27 .

UGA set the bowl margin of victory last year and then broke its own record a year later. On top of 18 players hitting the portal, Georgia is missing 5 starters including one of the nation's best players in Bowers & their starting right tackle.2 days ago
