Particularly in the Boiling Springs area of Spartanburg County. Almost seems coordinated and calculated.

You are about 10 years late. They've been buying up Landrum, Campobello, Inman, for years. I've been going to the Spartanburg County tax sales for the last 25 or so. They started showing up a dozen years ago.

You're late to the party. They have also been buying up Wellord in Dist. 5. They do great mason and rock work.

The largest concentration is in Campobello off HWY 11. The old Rock Hill Baptist Chruch has been a Russian Orthadox Church for years...

My mom has a house on Lake Bowen that she rents. They call atleast once a month to see if she's ready to sell.

Mostly Ukrainians, not Russians. The war has escalated migration, but this has been going on for 20 years. A lot of Belarusians as well. They were taken over by a brutal dictator in the late 90s so pro democracy folks fled to the US.

They research conservative, Christian, low cost of living areas (used to be). I was living in an apartment complex waiting on my house to be built and there was a Belarusian guy that lived across from me. He initially fled to NYC bc it was supposed to represent freedom and opportunity. He called it hell on earth, and moved to SC after a few months.

99% sure that church you were talking about is Slavic Orthodox or Slavic Baptist. Something like that. I’m sure there are some Russians, but just saying the majority are Eastern Orthodox Ukrainians.

Most folks think they are Ukrainians or Moldovans...when I've talked to them, most claim to be Russian. The Moldovans make up a lot of your waiters/waitresses in Gatlinburg. All 3 of the groups mentioned speak English fluently and some without an accent at all. Their children mix-mingle, marry naturalized Americans.

These are not Communist folks at all...

Heard they just bought Belue Farms in B. Springs. And I’m not late. I’ve seen this going on for years. This is the first time I posted about it. I own a house in Spartanburg still, as well as a farm in the Lake Bowen area. Have many relatives and friends there. And somehow I get the impression this ain’t about masonry or rock work. It’s very strange.

Is your mom from Spartanburg? My bro in law lives on Lake Bowen. Is your mom’s house on the hwy 9 side or the I-26 side?

My mom is from Inman originally. She married my dad who is from an area called Little Chicago in Northern Spartanburg County. After my parents divorced, my mom moved us to Greer out by the GSP airport. My mom later bought a home on the I26 side of Lake Bowen. You can see it from the I26 bridge crossing over lake bowen on the right coming from Landrum.

If i'm a guessing person, the Russians are buying this area due to it being an agriculturial area. My family in Little Chicago were peach farmers for many many years. It seems they (Russians) want to do farming. Just maybe, they'll buy these large land tracts and turn them back into functioning farms (peaches, cotton, tomatoes, strawberries, watermelons, etc).

Personally, I don't get the whole horse farm thing. I would like to see the land used for growing crops. I frequent the Asheville farmers market in the summer to get fresh produce from the upstate. I don't think I've talked to a Russian yet but who knows, they're English is so good that maybe I just did not know.

Red Dawn scared the Russians away from a full-scale military invasion, so they’re playing the long game.

Small world stuff. I am from Spartanburg, parents are from Greer and my wife from Inman. I believe you mentioned at one point you were in Erwin if I recall correctly. Our life took us to Johnson City for 17 years and Knoxville the last 9. Love the heck out of East TN.

Thanks for the insight and I hope you’re right as to turning that land back to functioning property.

Actually your 10years are about 40 years late. The Tolstoy Foundation was founded in 1939 by Alexandra Tolstoy, daughter of Leo Tolstoy. It’s mission is to help Russians escape and resettle away from their communist/repressive regime.

The Foundation has some weird connection to the Spartanburg area. This was never fully explained to me, but Russian refugees(that would have included Ukrainian) have been resettling in the Spartanburg area since the early 50’s.

When I worked in Spartanburg 20 years ago, First Presbyterian church in conjunction with Belks and the school districts had a winter coat give away for indigent students. They provided about 3,000 coats every winter. On the day of the giveaway they always had 3 or so Russian translators there to facilitate the process.

I mean who knew? This is one reason I have hope that Kateryna Koval #3 HS WBB prospect will end up with Dawn Staley

If you go to Costco in Spartanburg on a Saturday you'll think you're in Ukraine. I will say one thing those women from that area are some beautiful women....
