Saw an estimate that when you factor in Jimbo's buyout, his staff buyout and the new coach's deal along with his staff, this move by A&M will likely cost a minimum of $150 million.

We are about to find out if money can buy a championship.

I don't care how much money you have, and A&M has gobs, when you drop $150 million or more on a coaching move, the only reasonable return is a national title. Anything less than a title for that kind of payout is abject failure. Which means, A&M is most likely setting themselves up for failure and disappointment. The mindset of fans is "we're spending a lot of money on a coach so we should win." When you chuck $150 million into the coach position, fans believe and expect a title will follow.

So go offer Kirbi Smart $20 mil a year and see what happens. What’s another $20mil/yr ?

If I'm a top coach I will want at least a 100 million dollar buyout. TAMU has set a precedence for buyouts.

It will be interesting to see how they handle it. They are obviously looking for a top shelf coach, but anything less than a fully guaranteed contract with no offset, will signal inferiority to Jimbo. Coaches are all about perception when it comes to salary.

They should go for a no name type hire and take the pressure off for a few years. After pissing away $150 million, the stress of believing in another high dollar coach could be more than their fans can handle. It isn't like they are trying to get back to some former glory, they've never really had any real glory years.

Hire a Chadwell type G5 coach and hope you stumble on the next Meyer.

I don't understand the fascination with what A&M does.

Posters on here have always discussed major happenings at other SEC schools (and even non-SEC schools). By any measure, this is major. Jimbo's buyout more than triples the previous record buyout and accounts for more than half of all the buyout money ($176 million) owed to all P5 coaches fired since the start of the 2022 season.

For the sheer magnitude of it, it generates discussion. Not much different than the discussion of Michigan's sign-stealing.

If there were subforums like CockyTalk had, you could segregate topics that were not Gamecock-related, but that's not an option here.

And we play A&M every year, so there's that.

But a kid getting a 6 month truck lease and one free transfer is killing the game.

I hope the next coach cost them more!
