Hello,

I've been out west quite a bit but never to Jackson Hole, WY. I'm taking my wife for her birthday in mid-to-late June. So I'm interested in:

1) best airport to fly in to? Jackson Hole, Pocatello?
2) best resorts
3) general AKB run down on places to eat, visit etc.

thanks in advance

We were there last May. We flew into Idaho Falls, and spent time at Yellowstone before driving down to Jackson. How active are you, and what types of outdoor activities are you looking for?

Apex....have been there 7 times. Flying into Jackson is fine. Stayed at Teton Village outside of JH. The Mangy Moose and Alpenhoff are great places to dine inside of Teton Village. In JH, check out Cutty's. Owners are from Philly. Also liked Sidewinders. The GunBarrel Saloon is just terrific. As far as things to see, since your wife is a photographer...you need to drive the Teton Road from the Village into Grand Teton National Park...the wildlife is spectacular. If you get into Yellowstone itself, the Lamar Valley is awesome. Hiking...you can go online and find hikes you may want to take depending on how hard you want to work. I would recommend a horseback ride which will allow you to get into parts of the park that you can't get to on foot. And, June, you gotta do a rafting trip down the Snake River...go on VRBO and check out condo's to rent in Teton Village. Last 2 times we were there was late September...got great condos at a decent price. Was cool waking up at dawn and listening to elk bugling. BUY BEAR SPRAY!

We got a very reasonable AirBnB pretty close to downtown and were able to walk around. We spent most of our time outside and there really wasn’t any place in Jackson that really stood out in terms of food, but I see you already got some good recs on this.

Some “insider” scoops I got that paid off were driving down National Elk Refuge Road at dusk to see Big Horn Sheep (and see them, I did!). I don’t recall how far I had to drive, but it wasn’t more than maybe 10 minutes once I was on NERR before there was a hill full of them.

Another thing is to drive Moose Wilson Road (mostly gravel/dirt) at dawn or dusk. If you get on at Moose and head south you’ll come to a large pond on the left with a parking area in about 15 minutes (best that I can recall). Saw 2 grizzlies, a beaver, and a fox there in a 30 minute span one evening. If you do this drive, the food truck at the Bodega in the Jackson Hole Resort at the very south end had great Mexican food and outside seating.

The National Museum of Wildlife Art (https://www.wildlifeart.org/) just outside town was a pleasant surprise one afternoon when it was raining. If you go, DEFINITELY get the audio tour!

If you visit Mormon Row to take pictures of the famous barn, lower your expectations. But if you do head out that way, stop at the Cunningham Cabin Historic Site (https://www.nps.gov/grte/learn/historyculture/cunning.htm) and check out Menors Ferry Historic District (https://www.nps.gov/grte/learn/historyculture/menor.htm). Those two places contain a lot of interesting history, and there’s an old church worth checking out at Menors. There wasn’t anyone at either place when we were there in May, which made both stops even cooler to experience.

I‘d post pix, but they’re apparently too large.

Moose/Wilson Road is simply worth the trip. We would drive it twice a day, to and from Teton Village, and the wildlife was simply awesome. One day when we were tired from 12 hours the day before I took the rental car out by myself while my family stayed in the village. I stayed on the road for 8 hours...never left it...saw bear, moose, mule deer and a huge bull elk chasing a cow during the rut....

Teton Village!!! Thanks, man. Always wanted to go out in January...even though I don't ski. Just to be there, love that place. I bet the Elk Refuge is rocking.
Last winter Son1 drove from LA and spent 6 weeks with us over Christmas then stopped at JH to ride for a few days on his way home. Get a call one evening “Dad, I lost my VW keys on the mountain”. Lol we had to flatbed his car to Idaho VW to make him a key. But he did say JH is epic.

Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson. It’s fun to sit at the Bar on the saddle barstools and have a beer while looking at all of the silver dollars embedded in the bar top.

I didn't see anything mentioned, but the Jackson Airport will be closed from April until the end of June for renovations. We were also looking to possibly go in June.

That might be the largest I've seen the cornice on Corbett's get on video. Brutal. Jackson Hole is a humbling resort. I'm a fairly good skier and there are blue runs at Jackson that keep me on my toes. I've never been but always hear good things about Grand Targhee as a far less crowded locals resort.

Apex, I like the more rustic side, especially in Grand Teton National Park, but one recommendation is dinner at the Jackson Lake Lodge. Spectacular views from the dining room and just a great meal.
Thanks WP
