We got a very reasonable AirBnB pretty close to downtown and were able to walk around. We spent most of our time outside and there really wasn’t any place in Jackson that really stood out in terms of food, but I see you already got some good recs on this.
Some “insider” scoops I got that paid off were driving down National Elk Refuge Road at dusk to see Big Horn Sheep (and see them, I did!). I don’t recall how far I had to drive, but it wasn’t more than maybe 10 minutes once I was on NERR before there was a hill full of them.
Another thing is to drive Moose Wilson Road (mostly gravel/dirt) at dawn or dusk. If you get on at Moose and head south you’ll come to a large pond on the left with a parking area in about 15 minutes (best that I can recall). Saw 2 grizzlies, a beaver, and a fox there in a 30 minute span one evening. If you do this drive, the food truck at the Bodega in the Jackson Hole Resort at the very south end had great Mexican food and outside seating.
The National Museum of Wildlife Art (
https://www.wildlifeart.org/) just outside town was a pleasant surprise one afternoon when it was raining. If you go, DEFINITELY get the audio tour!
If you visit Mormon Row to take pictures of the famous barn, lower your expectations. But if you do head out that way, stop at the Cunningham Cabin Historic Site (
https://www.nps.gov/grte/learn/historyculture/cunning.htm) and check out Menors Ferry Historic District (
https://www.nps.gov/grte/learn/historyculture/menor.htm). Those two places contain a lot of interesting history, and there’s an old church worth checking out at Menors. There wasn’t anyone at either place when we were there in May, which made both stops even cooler to experience.
I‘d post pix, but they’re apparently too large.
